    Dreaded MOT

    As the met office are predicting sleet and temperatures of -4 to -6 tomorrow I brought the MOT forward to today:?


    Had to tax the old girl last ,month-----but that was free

    Now she passed the MOT too only cost me ÂŁ27.00

                Some garages use half price MOT's to drum up trade...

                  My local charges me trade price atÂŁ48, but I have heard of another local garage charges ÂŁ39 and is apparently very 'lenient' or should I say 'fair'. I will be going there soon.

                    And as long as they are reputable that is great for us, the customer.

                    Unfortunately I had a bad experience of one of those years ago. They found so much 'wrong' with my Mum's old Mini that it was virtually scrap. I took it to a mate at the Vauxhall main dealer for a second opinion and he said it was fine. That car went on for another 10 years after that with no major MOT expense.

                    Sounds like you have found a good one there Darren. I would stick with them for the future.

                      In the past some garages were guilty of “drumming” up business by failing cars, now with the MOT system requiring the garage to be directly connected to VOSA all garage results are now monitored even more than in the past. Any that regularly go above or below the average expected pass/fail rate are given a visit (unannounced). Even those garages who consistently stay within the average can and do get an unannounced visit. The cost of the MOT is recommended by the VOSA but the garage can charge what they like but with garages being recommended to change to one man MOT equipment the cost of this equipment is very high and so needs to be recouped so maybe the days of “cheap” MOT’s will soon be over. If you look carefully at the way that the one man MOT equipment works it is actually better for the older cars like Stags. I have had discussions with a man from VOSA and a MOT package manufacturer and they do agree that the one man style of testing is “kinder” for older cars. If you see one in operation do not be fooled at the way the front is checked with vibrating / sliding plates, if you look carefully at the way this is done it is much better and kinder to a Stag than the old way.

                        Don, thats interesting info on the new one man MOTs. I would have thought that the extra cost of equipment would be matched by the lower labour cost (one man) otherwise why would they want to change to the one man system?

                          It's not the garages who want the change to one man, it's VOSA. The cost of the equipment is between ÂŁ55k and ÂŁ80k depending upon specification. Thats a lot of man hours to get the investment back.

                            I am very lucky with my MOT man. He is only about a mile away and used to own a Stag and fortunately he loves them and understands them well. He charged me ÂŁ42 for the last MOT and Ifind him very trustworthy

                              When I took mine last summer the guy didn't know what sort of car it was.... but then again he is probably over 10 years younger thanthe Stag!!!!!!!!!!!!
