    Valve Clearance Data Beware

I have an earlycopy of the repair manual on CD Rom which, under engine datalists the inlet valve clearance as 0.008 to0.010in (0.15 to 0.2mm).

I was checkingmy valve clearances (using mm gauges)and something did not seem right. After some checkingI realised they had got the metric conversion wrong which should read 0.2 to 0.25mm.

I wonder if this error was also in the later manual?

That brings back fond memories, I'd forgotten all about that.
I couldn't understand whyI couldn't getthe clearancesright when I was rebuilding the engine 10 years or so agobut after several evenings of trying I eventually worked out the error in the ROM (or could have been Haynes, I think itis the same).

Reason I couldn't get it right was because I was using imperial feeler gauges but only had a metric micrometer so every time I trusted their conversion and calculated which shim to use the gap ended up wrong. Thought I was going mad at one point.

      Probably learned something from this.:?

Last night I also checked the Haynes manual, and that has the same error!

Here in the UK when the cars were manufacturedmost gauges would have been imperial, so the error probably had no effect until metric gauges became the norm, but in Europe it may have been the cause of some engine failures after they had been in a major service or a rebuild.

My engine has low compression on one cylinder which is not firing properly. I just checked the valve clearances on that cylinder and the inlet has a clearance of 0.1mm (should be at least 0.2mm). I think it is just possible that the inlet valve has insufficient clearance to close properly; I will soon findout when I have re-adjusted the gap!

I've got an original paper workshop manual dated Copyright 1977 and the error is still in it.
          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137
