Glove box door, bonnet insulation & interrupter switch.

Please excuse my ignorance guys and girls, bit I have a few little jobs to do on my car when I get home and hope you can answer a few of my questions...

#1 - I have noticed that the door of the Mk 1 glove compartments have 2 x holes in them. One is obviously for the lock, what is the other for?

#2 - I need to fit new bonnet insulation and was looking to see how the plates and rod that hold the insulation in place are secured. All I see are holes. Do these get held in place with pop rivets, screws or am I missing something?

#3 - I also need to fit the interrupter switch. I have this with the attached bracket. It has never been fitted to the car. Does it get wired up simply by tapping into the overdrive supply at one end when it's on and earth to the other terminal?

    Thanks for any replies received.

    Hello John,

1/ The other hole is for a red lamp, but cannot remember what it's for, somebody will tell you no doubt tomorrow.

    2/ pop rivets.

3/ no idea, but you will get info tomorrow, guaranteed.

1.5 out of three, poor score, sorry.

    Jeff.

I guess I'll start looking to buy a pop rivet gun then.

John I am going to change my bonnet insulation before the springand bought replacement chrome plates with Stag logo etched into them. They were on ebay but I can't see them for sale now. I will see who I bought them from as I think they will add a little bling when you open the bonnet, try this number on flea bay

          Mike,

Great minds think alike....... I remember seeing these and thought they would look good. Did a search last week and found his user name. I intended to email him to see if he had anymore available. You still in Baku? I was only home for 5 days over New Year and had to head back offshore. Managed to get the engine tuned up with new plugs, leads etc and adjusted timing to 14deg BTDC,but will check the carbs when I get home next. Never got the chance to take it out a run due to the snow. The missus was slagging me for buying a new cover and putting it on the car before leaving - she says I never tuck in the kids that way before I go !!!!!

Just tried a search again - can't find the guy.If you get his contact details can you PM me the info? Cheers

            Hi John,

The Mk1 Glove box has a hole for a map reading light. This comes on when the lid is opened and shines down so that the passenger can read a map in the dark. See photo of my old car:

Th ebonnet insulation plates are held in place withnormal 1/8"'pop' rivets. The bar is secured with much larger ones, but not having these I have used plastic 'rawlplugs' and self-tappers. See photo of current car:

                    Hello John,

Sorry about the 'red' light, don't know where I got that from.

The hole on mine was covered over with Burr Walnut veneer 18 years ago so too long to remember. The company was Burwood, which was on Slough Trading Estate and did all the Saab dashs. This was way before it became popular to re veneer Stag dashs I think, could be wrong...again.

Each supervisor from each department, veneering, spraying of UV protected lacquer, polishing, did mine and at the time the charge would have been £500. All made from 1 sheet of veneer so all the grain ran to the next panel and matched. They presented all 7 pieces with white gloves, the dash wrapped in tissue paper. Best part of my car(apart from my new engine now) and kept me going with the re-furb.

They were going to do Rolls Royce veneering but RR wouldn't give them a free hand on how to do it so Burwood pulled out. I'll post a photo when I can get to my garage, truly lovely workmanship.

I'll still claim 1 point for the pop rivets though!

                    Jeff.

I reckon he means the fuel inertia switch, unless he has an after market add-on.

Is it the inhibitor switch on the gear box to stop selecting overdrive when in 1st or 2nd gear? (Part No - BAU1074A)

This switch is on a bracket that bolts around item TKC1000 on the drawing. Seems to me that when you are in overdrive, a 12v signal goes to the switch, which then will activate and a pin opens out. The bracket and switch is positioned in such a way that when this pin is out ( overdrive on ), it stops the gear lever from being able to be putinto reverse.

When I get home, I'll take a few pictures for you all to see. From the replies, can I assume that this is a home made device? The bracket seems to be quite professionally made.

I have seen this switch on sale on E-bay:

                              Hi John

My Stag has a J type o/d and has the inhibitor switch on top of the g/box cover.

Is the bracket curved and locates around the socket for the gear lever in the top cover? I remember my Triumph 2000 withA type o/dfrom many years ago had this arrangement for the overdrive drive inhibitor switch. It doesn't stop you selecting reverse but is a switch with a plunger that isoperated by the g/box selector rods to stop the o/dfrom working in the wrong gears.

I didn't know they were fitted to Stags but maybe they are for the earlier A type o/d.The switchwould be in the + supply circuit to the o/d solenoid.

Are you sure you do not have an o/d inhibitor switchfitted to the g/box top cover already?

                              Pete
