    Electric Windows

    Hi

I have recently bought a Stag (registered 2/1/73) so it is a Mk 1, and was told by the vendor who is a colleague that he had fitted new reconditioned window motors but that the windows only moved slowly.

Well they only move half an inch up and half an inch down now when I operate the switches. In fact the passenger one is stuck about two thirds down and I cannot move it,other than the slight up and down movement.

He also told me that the windows moved freely in the runners so I'm assuming that they are the correct size.

Have cleaned contacts in switches etc and at the relay and thermo switch.

    Any ideas?

    Owen,

Have you tried a silicone based lubricant on the runners? Something like Mr Sheen, or a proprietry product - Holts do a rubber lubricant in spray form. Spray some of this in the runners inside and out and operate the windows, this may free them up.

Check all electrical connections, particularly earths, are clean and good. Also check the guide runner inside the door that the motor arm runs in. This has a wheel on the end and can get dry. You will need to remove the door trim to get to this.

      Hi owen

I'v just done mine because they had the same problem almost stoping in the middle.

I removed the motor unit from the door and replaced the nylon roller on the end of the arm(it had become square)by drilling out the rivet and using a countersunk bolt and two nuts to lock a new home made roller on the arm.

Next i replaced the felt inserts in the runners which had become sticky from polish or somthing like that.

i found the motor moved freely without all the friction of the two faults mentioned and now my window moves up at just under modern car standards.

As a quick fix you could try a silicon spray like cocpit shine around the felt ,it speeded mine up even more.

      Good luck Steve

Thanks Steve and Dave for your prompt and helpful suggestions.

I have now taken it all apart and will renew the channels as spraying it with silicone didn't solve it.

I will also replace the white nylon wheel on the end of the arm as it won't revolve other than with the help of pliers.

I assume it is meant turn freely?

I managed to obtain the roller from Rimmers but not the other part of it so I will use your idea Steve and use nuts and a bolt.

        Thanks again

Make sure to use the thinest nut you can get and cut the bolt off flush to the nuton the interior side of the armother wise the nut and end of the bolt will hit the pushrods to the door locks when it goes up and down.
