I've had kind offers of swapping shims from Russ and Chris and i may well need to take them up ,but as my shims all need reducing i was wondering if they can be ground down or will i go through a hardened coating?
Not sure if there is a hardened coating or not, I suspect not. I had four of mine ground down a few thou when I did my heads last year. Only done a few thousand miles since - no problems with clearances. I think this is the best way of getting clearances spot on as you do the math and get the exact amount skimmed off on a surface grinder - vitually guarantees it will be right when you reassemble. It only takes a few minutes to grind each shim as well.
