    Intermittent Fuel Problem ?

Took the Stag for a 120 mile round trip today to see my mother for lunch;filled up onfuel (ouch !!) the old girl ran sweet as a nut up to Nottingham,
parked up for about an hour before leaving to go to the local for lunch; got 50yards down the road ..... spluttered to a halt; re-started ok, set off and got another 50 yards and the same happened again.

After a head scratchinglook under the bonnet, switched on the ignition to try again and heard the fuel pump ticking furiously for about 10 seconds. She re-started fine; had lunch, re-started again and drove home with no further problems.

Maybethe old girl just doesn't like my mother? I could have c**p in the fuel? or do I have an impending pump problem ??????? :?

Or sticky points in the fuel pump. Mine did similar thing a few years backbut needed a clonk with an adjustable to get it pumping again.

Thanks Nick, a good clonk with an adjustable can solve alot of gremlins

hi dave, bit late reply but sounds like pump to me. if still a problem when you stop .dont turn your ignition off quickly check fuel filter if no fuel tap pump if fuel goes to filter points are sticking. when you turned ignition on the furrious ticking was the pump filling fuel line to carbs. If filter is full when you come to a halt it could be you filled her up and the needle valves in carbs have got some muck in them. Check thh air filter box and see if there is any fuel in there if there is then needle valves are at fault . if not by pass the inertiia switch on bulkhead next to fuse box regards tony

I'm in the pump camp too.

Mine did this whole cutting out thing a year or too back. Quite disturbing when it does it in the outside lane of the m40. Normally ignition off and back on got it going again.

Then it (as in the pump)died on mecompletely it was at this point that I discovered my fuel gauge was a pathological liar and that although it said it had ¼ tank there was nowt in there. Shortly after the fuel gauge sender gave up completely. Anyway and that aside I cleared all the black carbon deposits from around the points in the pump, carefully cleaned the points and set off again. It lasted a month before it failed again so I went solid state with a nice new pump.

I recommend this route if you find a sharp tap with an adjustable wrench gets you going again.

                    Tony, Richard,

many thanks for the responses, i've suspected the needle valves for a while because I get a smell of petrol around the air filter box about 10 minutes after switching off; very noticableafter I put the car back in the garage when it's warm and normallyfollowed byaSWMBO comment '.......... car ***** stinks'

the symptoms would suggest there is something intermittent with the pump as well, until I can take a look i'd better keep that wrench handy. I like thethought of solid state peace of mind!!!!

Can anyone advise if this type of pump such as(Ebay Item 5639236953)is suitable? the ad claims so but the fuel line connections dont look aligned the same. :?

Hiya Dave, I went to Burlens for an electronic SU pump some years ago,not the cheapest but will bolt straight on and be reliable. I'm waiting on a pair of ball float chamber valves from SC Parts, I'll let you know if they solve my cars on-going problem, I've also bought a Filter King pressure regulator/filter with a gauge, I'm not convinced my pump is putting out the correct pressure and this should help with diagnosis. Martin.

good luck, hope the pressure regulator gauge helps; did you getyour replacement needle valves?

                            cheers
