    Oil

    Hi

My rebuilt engine needs an oil change - the book says Castrol GTX, but there is a variety of GTX's available - which oil do the members recommend?

    Hi, Pete.

The handbook was written, obviously, before oil went 'hi-tech'. The Stag engine was built with fairly ordinary 20W-50 oil in mind. There are many who run their engines on synthetic or semi-synthetic oil with no adverse problems. Others use 'ordinary oil' such as Unipart 20W-50, with the opinion that expensive oil is a waste of money.

Who rebuilt your engine? If it was done by a professional outlet, then ask them for recommendation. At least they then cannot blame the wrong oil should anything go wrong in any warranty period.

Rimmers list Unipart 20W-50, Castrol Classic 20W-50 and Duckhams Q 20W-50.

Paddocks and Robsportlist Penrite Classic 20W-50.

EJ Ward and Robsport list '76' 20W-50 (never heard of it!)

There is also Millers Classic 20W-50, Halfords Classic 20W-50, and others.

Virtually anything available will meet or exceed the specifications of the original Castrol GTX, and others, listed in the handbook.

      Pete,

I've run mine on Duckhams Q for 17 years and had no problems. If you go to the Classic Car show at theNEC in Nov you will be able to get it for£10 or you may be lucky enough to get it locallyat that price. Nobody has come up with an argument that says anything other than spending more than that is just a waste of money.

      Regards, Andrew

This was the answer I was given by Castrol when asked if it would be better to use one of their more modern grades:

'The current Castrol recommendation is Castrol Classic XL20w/50'

I have always used Duckhams Q (over about 75,000 miles).

          Hi

I've always used Duckhams 20 /50 and never had any problems. Made sure to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. The car is used daily and runs as sweet as a nut.
