Not Stag related but please help!

    Hi All

I have a problem with my 306, when you apply the brakes even very gently the I keep getting a strange ratcheting sound and grindingfeel like the ABS is kicking in! This can happen even when doing 5 mph and gently applying the brakes but not all the time:?

It seems to be coming from the OSF brake but I can not see anything wrong visually that is.

The brake pads are fairly new and have plenty of material left and the rear pads & discs are new but the noise/feel was there before and after doing the rears.

    What should I look for?

The ABS light is not on and if you do an emergency stop it kicks in but very early and every time.

I do not really want to pay silly dealer prices to look at this but will do if really necessary

    Hi Stu

I had a similar problem with my Nissan last year. It was the ABS toothed gear which is shrunk onto the CV joint. It had split resulting in a confused ABS system but no warning light.

New CV joint fitted and the problem went away.

    Hope this helps.

If the OSF brake was snatching due to a disk or pad fault, the ABS would kick in. Check the condition of the brake pads and disk.

        Hi Guys

Thanks for the replies so far, I will check the CV Joint condition but this was only check in November for the Mot and the problem was there before this.

I have checked the discs for visual faults and rotated to check for warping but could see nothing wrong, they were replaced along with pads 8000 miles ago.

          Stu

The split in the ABS gearwheel was only about 1mm wide. A crack will turn into a split overnight given the right conditions. So the fact that your car was MOT'd in November is not really relevant.

Anyway, whatever it is, I hope you fix it quickly and cheaply

          Cheers

I recall something similar being discussed on an Alfa forum a few years ago, the diagnosis being similar to that Bruce has given ie a faulty ABS ring / sensor, but in this casesimply due to the build up of muck and debris from worn pads and discs on the ring or sensor causing the ABS to think that wheel wasn't rotaing as it should when braking, and so cutting in the ABS too early.

              Hi John

I saw this mentioned on the Cherokee forum about small stone etc getting into the slots of the ABS gear wheel cause it to grind/rachet.

I will inspect on Sunday as the weather will be nice, top down weather for the hardy and brave

                Hi Stuart.

I agree that the ABS ring sounds a likely culprit.

I've a friend who has had several Citroen ZXs which are identical to the 306 under the skin. I'll ask him about this, but I can't contact him till next week so I'll let you know if he comes up with any suggestions.

                Cheers

                Julian

                  Hi All

Well had a look and due to the excellent advise on here took me 2 mins to fond the problem which was as stated a cracked ABS sensor ring

Looks like it will have to go to the garage to be fix as I have not got the experiance or tools to fix this problem

                  Thanks all for your help.

Perhaps we should rename the forum petrol heads .com

                    Hi Stuart,

Are you sure? Didn't you rebuild the struts on your Stag?

Special tools required - ball joint splitter and torque wrench (30mm socket IIRC) Hubnut is done up to about 180lbft

Driveshafts are about #50 on eBay (+p&p) - new with ABS ring - not sure of your model.

                    Proceedure:

                    1. Remove hubnut - throw it away and refit with new one. Grind the old one off with min grinder if you can't undo it.
                    2. jack up front of car and support on stands
                    3. remove road wheel, PUT A TRAY UNDER THE INNER END OF THE DRIVESHAFT TO CATCH THE GEARBOX OIL!!!!!
                    4. Split track rod end, release end of anti roll bar - may need to jack up wishbone to do this to take stress of ARB
                    5. Undo pinch bolt at bottom of strut - use crowbar or similar to separate strut and wishbone.
                    6. At this point bottom of strut is free - you may need to unbolt the caliper if the brake hose is not long enough.
                    7. Tap the end of the drive shaft through the hub - pull the strut away from the car to release the outer end of the shaft.
                    8. pull driveshaft out.

Refit in revese order. Don't forget to use a new hubnut and nyloc on the bottom pinch bolt and refil the gearbox with oil (EP 80)

I can do one on a 106 (baby 306) in about 45 mins start to finish.

                    Worth a look anyway.

                    Good luck

                    Roger

                      Hi Rodger

Yes I did rebuild the front suspension on the Stag and after looking at the manual your right I do have the tools.

Looking on E bay a new driveshaft is £42.99 but might be able to get it cheaper at my local motor factor who gives me trade prices

It is a bit of a pain though as this is the wifes car for going to and from work so used 6 days a week:?
