    IGNITION LIGHT

My ignition light wont go out when the car starts,I thought it was something to do with the battery as the volt meter goes from about to 14 volts to 11 then rests at 12 volts.Changed the battery Saturday but still wont go out.Is it the coil, the alternator, the alternator seems to charge as I put a meter on it and it seems to be charging. The car today seems to be driving on about six cylinders also. I was thinking of connecting a wire to the coil and to the fuse box to get a direct 12 volt to try and boost the power.speedo has also stopped working, unsure if related or not.The car has Luminition electronic ignition fitted.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    cheers

hi, i heard some where that the red light serves as a warning light for low oil pressure, hope this is not the case, but will pay to get it checked out.

Check the thin wire going to the alternator,(brown and yellow on my mk2), there is a connection below the washer bottle. If you disconnect this the light should go out, which would suggest an alternator problem, perhaps:?

I am sure there is no connection between the ignition light and oil pressure. The brake warning light on the dashboard is wired into the oil pressure switch so that it comes on dim when the ignition is switched onas a bulb test and goes out as the oil pressure builds. It comes on bright if the PDWA switch moves as a result of loss ofpressure in one of the brake circuits.

If the ignition light isn't going out it is either the alternator or, if you have a Mk1, the charging relay fixed to the offside suspension turret. On some there is a single (brown/yellow) wire attached to the alternator which activates the light. This could be disconnected.

The speedo is mechanical, so shouldn't be affected by alternator problems.
