    overdrive oil filter bowl

    Hi All

When was the last time you removed the oil filter bowl from your overdrive unit and cleaned it?

I did the one on my gearbox yesterday and the bowl and filter were disgusting:?

Wouldn't that entail training all/most of the oil from the gearbox? I can see that being a really messy job!

Yeah, TRAINING gearbox oil is like herding cats. It does what it bloody well wants and I have a garage floor to prove it

          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

To access the filter bowl, remove the small sump guard which is located on the underneath towards the rearof the gearbox. The guard is held in place by two nuts. Then undo the large toothed drain plugand thebowl, filter mesh and magnetic plates all pop out. Clean, refit with new seal and hey presto.

I am unsure if the gearbox and overdrive share common oil. Somehow I doubt it as there are two filler plugs and two drain plugs.

Cleaned the filter in mine as I thought it would be good time to do it before it goes into the car. Having seen the condition of the oil I am glad I did.

Interestingly, on the Rimmers site it says if you fitting a new gearbox without the overdrive, to make sure the old overdrive is cleaned out to avoid cross-contamination of the new gearbox :?

Same oil. Gearbox and o/drive are common, which is why you should never use any friction reducer such as Slick 50 in a 'box fitted with o/drive.
