Reading other posts about tyre deflation and possible reasons, I am reminded that during my time in the industry, tests to find reasons for tyre failures were carried out. These included a regular "debris count" by the ministry of transport where bits of tyre wreckage were collected from a section of motorway for analysis. The result not surprisingly was most failures were due to underinflation (or overloading which is much the same thing). Of particular interest was that deflation causing overheating and subsequent failure was to a very large extent not caused by penetration but was down to valve failure. Valve caps missing, left in the dirt when checking pressures, loose cores, failing due to splitting around the base of the valve and so on. The message is clear. Invest in decent valve caps and maintain your valves and you reduce the risk of tyre failure. Probably talking to the converted on this forum but worth a mention.
