    Door card membrane

Hi Guys can you put me right, my door card membrane is attached to the door cards/panels, see photo or should they be glued to the door frame, or would there have been a second water proof membrane on the door frame.
Under the door card membrane is a ticket L.C.P (Trim) LTD 5 sept 1975, were these the Leyland panel makers?

How have you fitted your water proof membranes?, this is the first time i have had these off, not sure what was as factory, what is now best practice?

Thank for your help in advance

Martin, the plastic membrane on my vehicle and all other Stags I have noticed is attached to the door card. As it would be very dificult if attached to the door frame to clip the door trim back on and the holes in the membrane around where the male clips fit would have to be too large for this to work and certainly not be as moisture proof a seal. They would have been designed to fit on the door card/masonite from the start as it more effective a seal; to only protect the card/masonite/trim though nothing further. Also there was no other barrier/seal. On modern applications it is attached the other way around; to the door frame with a mastic, usually in a very thick plastic material designed not only to seal the door from moisture but to work as an acoustic speaker box.
Very dificult to achieve optimum door acoustics when classic cars from this vintage were designed this way with the plastic on the masonite card and the dificulty in creating a good door cavity seal, but I am working on this and will post when complete.

Can comment on ford, they fit the plastic membrane to the door using a strong adhesive. It's fitted just to the inside edge of the trim clip line.

My memory of the Triumph 2000 range from the last century when I worked on them a lot is that there was a thicker gauge plastic sheet 'weather curtain' that was attached to the inside panel of the door top and sides and tucked into the door bottom before the trim panel is fitted. The adhesive was something thick and gunky and was applied in a strip inboard of the trim clip holes.

In the Stag ROM, section 76, there are several references to the 'weather curtain' being removed after the door trim pad if there is need to gain access to the door interior. I believe that, at least on early cars, there was a separate 'weather curtain' which helps to control water access through the window seals. According to one Parts Catalogue (on stagbytriumph.co.uk) the 'weather curtain' was part number 913440, and discontinued in later cars. There were two further polythene seals, around the door handle and above the handle aperture.

I'm often a 'ghost' on here, occasionally say something, not necessarily when I think someone says something wrong.

I can't see there being a point in having a forum without ghosting, after all the ghosts may be taking an interest but might not have any practical input or particular view to put forward. Just because we're out here it doesn't mean we're malevolent.

Am I wrong in thinking you disaprove of ghosts because in your words they are "not helping", whatever that means?

I'm not picking a fight, I'm just trying to understand your view on the matter.

Martin, I replaced these membranes on my Stag and MGB and used mastic to stick them to the door frame, just inside the line of the door cards. I used the blue polythene that builders use as I had it lying around.

Visqueen, it’s used for waterproofing concrete foundations. Should work for Stag doors!

To stick the visqueen to the door shell, you could try butyl. I believe it never quite sets off, so you stand a chance of unpeeling the visqueen if needed. It comes in a cartridge or as a roll of double sided 'tape'

I'm going down this route and have recently bought a roll of this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332555427...m=332555427938 which I intend to use together with a thick plastic to create a sealing membrane on the door itself. I was initially worried about where to route the seal so I don't end up standing off the door card clips and preventing the door card sitting properly home, but that buytl is very mouldable so can be squashed quite flat if necessary. Haven't done the job yet so unable to comment on how it went.
