Accidental reverse gear selection

My modern car has a six speed manual gearbox, and I often find myself trying to select a phantom fifth gear in my MOD Stag. This means trying to select reverse at 50 mph and catching myself (sometimes).

Should the gearbox have a reverse lockout or has it always been possible to just push across the gate from 3/4 plane?

As I recall the selector rod for reverse has a slot that is slightly higher than the other rods and in the Base of the gear lever there is a spring loaded device that should prevent you accidentally engaging reverse . You may have lost this spring .
