Stag Air Filter Box

Anyone know the purpose and/or function of the partial blanking of the passage from the air filter box to the elbows leading to the carbs? This appears to have been a separate part (Plate 157935) which is no longer available, but now seems to be part of the lower section of the air box.

Seems like the blanking (between 1/3 and 1/4 of potential inlet area) would have a bad effect on full flow of air, especially at full throttle. Apologies if this is already discussed somewhere else but I couldn't find it using search function.

Steve, It has been discussed before, and I haven't tried to do a search. But from memory, I think it was mentioned that they control the airflow around the carb inlet elbows.

disrupts the airflow for better mix iirc. was a very early mod, most airboxes will have the mod spot welded into place

My May 71 car has loose plates, not tried to see what happens if I take them out though.........

Thanks for all the comments so far, and the revelation of where the original discussion thread could be found. My interest is more in the "why was this designed this way?" category than in making any change - at least till I have a bit more information.
