I used epoxy primer on a bare shell respray, seemed an odd fluid when minimal amount of thinners were used, I thought I perhaps used an unsympathetic thinners, but it sprayed well without any noticeable issues. I used 30psi and minimal thinners. I used Lesonal 2K epoxy primer.
Not all 2 part epoxy primers contain isocyanates. Look at the MSDS, Material Safety Data Sheet, before you buy so you know what you are dealing with and can take the appropriate precautions. If it contains isocyanates then make sure ALL your skin is covered and you use an air fed breathing mask or better still use one that doesn't contain isocyanates.
Epoxy based primers are good. As others have said, tough, covers well and easy to apply, just read the safety sheets before using. As jakesmig says if you are spraying it then can be a bit odd, but it levels off nicely and in the right conditions hardens off quite quickly.
I have used it on 3 cars so far and its going on the Stag as well. Its pretty much the standard nowadays. Make it the first coat on bare metal, maybe the seal coat as well if needed. I always have it a contrasting colour to the hi-build primer so I can see when I'm going to break into it and stop blocking right away to shoot extra hi-build, maintaining its integrity. The longest I kept a car was the TR250 and after 8 years or so I never saw any problems with the paint at all, no bubbles, no failures, nothing. The guy contacted me a year or two ago and said the paint was fine, -- maybe 16 years by then?
Dave the one I used is on my resto thread. When I priced up some all singing and dancing ones that promise the earth it was so expensive. The one I used is widely used in the trade and has a zinc content. The pot of paint was really heavy. My car was more or less dipped in it I even rolled it around inside my boot cavity and inside all panels
