    Door Card Backing material?

    I use my car all year round and it lives outside and is a convertible so the door cards have gone..actually they already were a little wavy..when I removed them to have a looksee the hardboard had not unsurprisingly distended a little..is it possible to just remove the hardboard and replace as the rest of the door cards are both original and in near perfect condition?
    14 months ownership 7500 miles pretty reliable to be honest

    I'm sure i have read that others have made a good job of it with a variety of materials, thin ply, aluminium and some plastic material. I don't have time to search through the forum but you might find some stuff in the archives

      plastic sheet over the door to protect the backing from condensation.

      Fit new hardboard backing to existing covering is very easy to do. then paint the back of the card/hardboard with varnish to slow to moisture soak

      I have yet to find a rigid plastic sheet big enough (within my meagre budget) to replace the hardboard

        I painted my new ones with yacht varnish and made a "curtain" to cover them (after it had dried of course) from some visqueen plastic sheet...... still good 7 years on

            I have tried various door card materials with limited success including in aluminium which was way too heavy for my liking, and have decided to go back to the masonite.
            Its impossible in Australia to get the original 2.5mm masonite and if you go to a leather trim (which I have), with the commonly available 3mm masonite it all becomes way too thick. I think even if you stuck to vinyl there would be issues with the 3mm.
            The local large hardware chain which we are told here you Brits dont like to shop at -Bunnings- (Bunnings is a crazy cashed up Aussie company thinking they were going to be able to easily take over the UK hardware market in one simple scoop...) and others, usually stock an inferior for automotive use - usually asian made - masonite which is probably okay for most moisture free applications. But I would not use it in this instance.
            There is a great outfit here in Australia I did contact which specialises only in classic car door cards and only uses a superior European made automotive grade masonite. I am sure there may be others world wide who do this as well but this firm stocks the 2.5mm European hardwood masonite. I supplied their factory my fairly good condition originals including the rear cards as a template so they could offer a full fit out for a Stag. They have managed to reproduce and laser cut me a superb recreation. I will post a seperate thread including photos of their work. I am not affiliated with them in any way and they were very pleasant to deal with.
