How easy is it to remove cam cover gauze?

Going to repaint my cam covers but would like to remove clean and replace the breather gauze. Is it easy to access, I’m mean just a couple of tack welds to remove or is it more involved?
I can tack weld it back, it’s just removal.
Also, when replacing gauze, presume stainless steel gauze is available?
    Cheers

I did it on mine Andrew and it is as you described - not too difficult. I unravelled the gauze pad and popped it into the ultrassonic cleaner a few times, then refolded it.

I just eased the welds away by gently levering with a small screw driver, then converted the gauze plate to a slide fit as edd,s thread page 82 I think, will post later ,when I have finished toiling at the sweat shop, some of us have to paid your pensions.

used a dremel to cut a slot down one side of the retaining plate. bent up slightly to remove the gauze, cleaned and replaced then bent back the cover and secured with a single tack weld to aid easy removal next time.

dont paint inside the came cover will you

the black dust is blast media that I was able to bang out from the gauze

it was dumped on the scrap pile

I'm so pleased my idea has been used and many thanks for saving me the time finding my own post.
it's a handy idea as it allows either painting or chroming and then easy rebuilding.

Thanks for all the advice on the breather, successfully removed, cleaned and welded back. Now with then nicely painted and feeling chuffed,

Can you spray smooth Hammerite with a lacquer?

Unless it's changed, Hammerite used to be celly based IIRC, so yes.

I sprayed min with a ford silver rattlecan and wafted lacquer over the top.

The paint stuck and was good but my ham fistery when working on the engine has scratched the paint.

                          No heat issues at all.

When I've used Hammerite I use petrol to clean the brush but I wouldn't recommend it as a paint thinner.
