This is very interesting. I know from his restoration blog videos that Jay Leno has been one of those evangelising about the potential of 3D printing technology for classic cars and machinery. Maybe SOCTFL will find itself moving from funding physical tooling to compiling 3D printing data.

Yes, that's pretty much the normal thing to do, certainly in the hobby sector. Although as i've discovered, 3D printing isn't so much about making other things but spending far too much time trying to improve the printer itself. Having said that, the number of repair items that have found their way around the house has silence my wife's scepticism and I've printed plastic parts for other vehicles of mine.

I'm not sure i'll be printing a V8 cylinder head anytime soon though

I saw that too, what a bright lad and the prince he reckoned would be £80or less..

Yeah, suppose there's a wee chance the attendants might get wind of it too soon....

Look forward anyway to learn more about what you guys have been printing so please do let us know when you can.

                  Cheers,

for a "mass" production it is to expensive to work with a metall 3D Printer, but itis easy and cheaper to print the sand castings

Here is a formula 1 cylinder head printed with the printer from Lübeck
This concept F1 Cylinder Head is printed on a SLM 500 (SLM Solution) in Aluminium (AlMg10Si) by FIT West. You can see a video how the design was approached by clicking here.

                    this company produce engine parts

here they print the sand castings for a head
3D printing offers completely new opportunities in reverse engineering. Through tool-less production of spare parts, classic car engines can be overhauled.

I am the secretary of a local model engineering club, a couple of our guys are into 3D printing. There is a forum on line that have used old printer drive motors to make a 3D printer.
this has progressed to using the first stage printer to print parts for the updated mk2 printer.
we looked at a metal 3D printer out of interest that would be big enough to print engine parts.
when the supplier mailed me a discount price offering £20,000 off the list price, l decided it's not for me.
so l think this is above the limits of the SOCTFL unless we all chip in a bit more.

Complex castings such as cylinder heads can be cast with methods which involve melting out plastic or wax as aluminium is poured in. Formation of the wax/plastic forms is within the limits of 3D printing, without the expense of metal 3D printing - could this allow the casting of Millennium heads?

We have the Moulds so the casting process isn’t the problem, finding someone to do
it - now there’s a different story. Getting them machined - so difficult.

If you come to the SOCTFL AGM you’ll hear it as it is. 15 April
