    Shaft problems

Can anyone identify and explain this pair of jackshafts,a member on here was found to have excessively worn dizzy drive gear so we pulled his jackshaft to inspect, this was worn beyond use. This replacement was sourced as a mk1 shaft but it is minus two journals as his original in bottom of pic. Im gussing this was an early shaft then they realised there was whip over the long gap twixt bearings so added a pair as bottom.new or good shaft required now .
    thanks

According to the Leyland parts manual (April 1978 edition) there was only ever one jackshaft (214789). The sketch in the parts manual does not appear to show the additional journals.

I am sure someone else will be along who has a jackshaft out of an engine.

I have a pre production 'graphics catalogue' printed in '69 and it shows the jackshaft with the extra journals. if the engine was running with the the shaft with the extra journals then the top shaft cannot be used as there will be oil feeds to the journals and without them the oil will escape under pressure. - Alan

David thanks i thought there was only one as you say , Alan thats a very important point i will need to use a borescope to inspect to see if there are bearings in the block to run in ,ive also had reliable information to suggest that the dolomite ,tr7 etc used a shaft that will also fit so this could of been a lashup by the po.

Steve I know the TR7 well and the jack shaft is similar but the front bearing is shorter (one cam chain) and overall length is shorter. It does have the extra journals as well - Alan

The jackshaft with the extra lobes is an early jackshaft, the other shaft is a later jackshaft, both jackshafts will fit the engine, there are no bearings for the lobes and no oil feed to or from these lobes, the TR7 uses a mechanical fuel pump the rear lobe is machined to operate the fuel pump on the TR7 and Dolomite, I guess BL used the same basic casting for the Stag, TR7 and Dolomite jackshafts and machined to suite either engines, the only basic difference is the length of the front bearing.

                  Interesting.
I heard of an engine that had a factory bush fitted at the front bearing in the block.....as a reclaim. never heard of one since though.

The factory never fitted bushes, I started fitting them in the early 1980’s when the water pump gears were found to be faulty and destroyed the pump and jackshaft gears, the fine metal particles ended up in the front jackshaft bearing and damaging the bearing surface, I had several engines that had bronze bushes fitted to save the otherwise good engine block. BL had so many warranty claims they withdrew the water pump from sale and recalled all old stock, all the remaining pumps from the manufacturers were sold on to a parts specialist and the problems started all over again. There are still problems with some water pumps but you can now buy jackshafts 020th oversize so just a line bore is needed to reclaim a block.

                    Tony.

                      Thanks Tony.
I was at the workshop when they found the so called factory fitted bush, however I could not be certain it was factory.
