Filter King and fuel pressure - opinions please

Hi all. I was interested to read Chris Liles' artice in the latest magazine regarding fuel pressure. I've been considering getting a pressure check done on my car for a while and this may make me finally get round to it!
Rather than opting for the regulator in the boot solution like Chris I was considering the Filter King option in the engne bay instead.
As these aren't overly cheap (especially coupled with the cost of the gauge) I was after people's experience with these - are they any good and worth the money, or just not necessary?
Also be very interested to see the mounting solutions for these others have used. I'd have thought the strut top bolts would provide a suitable point but that would mean fabricating a bespoke bracket. Not the hardest thing in the world by any means but what have you all come up with?
    Thanks!

Why not the Sytec one in the boot? It seems to work (according to Chris), is much cheaper and is out of sight.

If you have problems with flooding then first check the pressure as you say - it could just be a leaking float valve. If your pressure is too high then why not fix the problem by fitting a pump with the correct pressure output instead of trying to fix the problem caused by an incorrect pump.

I had a filter king on my last kit car but this was running twin 45 delorto carbs and a fascet pump so was needed to regulate pressure. But as Simon says sort the problem don't add another possible suspect into the the equation.

I've got a Filter King on my Lotus 7 running twin 40DCOEs with a SU pump replacing the original AC mechanical one and it works well enabling me to regulate the pressure and it also has a very good filter. Does the Sytec also have a filter?

I just used the bracket that came with the Filter King.

I am not sure and not having inspected a filter king and someone may contradict me but I have seen a diagram showing fuel flows into the filter from right to left so if fitted by a bracket to the n/s strut mount or inner wing would make the piping look awkward and I like neatness!!

I already had a electronic fuel pump (from a reputable supplier ) and after suffering some carb flooding despite having Viton tipped valves fitted I tested the pump pressure was which proved to be above 3.5 0.s.i.

So I thought it may be a worthwhile investment, I installed mine in the boot, just above the fuel pump, using the supplied bracket, with the liner back in position it is hidden but accessible for servicing.

Thanks all. Some very useful food for thought there. I'm not experiencing any flooding issues. The carbs are a reconditioned pair from Alan Davis. I'm just trying to ensure that I'm not likely to cause any issues down the line by over-pressurising them. I guess a gauge test will tell me if I need to take measures or not. The pump was replaced by the PO just before I bought the car.

just to add my experience of the filter king ,it is a very good unit capable of maintaining a constant steady pressure .used with a gauge to set up and then removed after . my unit is in the engine bay the gauge is removed for fear of breakage and leaks and a plug in its place as recomended by mallpassi( gauge only used at service intervals to test ). i also bought a very fine micron fuel filter made of stainless steel to replace the paper element in it .this is a straight forward swop and ever cleanable so no more costs. one thing i might add i did get a strong fuel smell a yr or so after fitting and found a hairline fracture in the glass bowl which i then upgraded to the aluminium one which is rally approved and since it has been excellent so i would definatley recomend this set up .
                  regards

Here's my Filter King in situe. Had a problem with overfuelling/flooding/hot start and this cured it. Instructions are dead simple, just don't shut the bonnet with the gauge in place !

I had a filter king regulator in the 80s that didn't have a bowl on it, the cheaper version IIRC, do they still sell those ?

fitted a filter king in place of the original engine bay fuel filter. mounted using bracket supplied, but back to front so that the fuel line flows through the same as the original route. easy and not bothered changing it. more info here p2 of this thread

Set it to 2psi or thereabouts, flooding fixed, running a shed load smoother

and last MOT.... yeah i'll say pass, despite it not being needed for 73 car

I mounted mine on the bulkhead. Works a treat and it was nice to set and regulate the pressure.

Thanks all. I've ordered the pressure gauge so we'll see what the pressure is shortly and go from there.
