I thought those of you who responded to my original post might be interested in an update on this.
I put the pressure gauge in the fuel line as per Chris Liles' article. It was coming out with a reading of nearly 5, so way more than the specified figure in the ROM. I managed to get a second hand pressure regulator on ebay and fitted it in the boot just as Chris did. Adjusted it up and I now have a steady line pressure of bang on 2.7 (with the regulator on 3). Not had the chance to road test as yet, but it seems to be much more responsive to the throttle and running much more smoothly. Maybe there's something in all this after all!

Chris Liles' April 2018 magazine article (thanks, Chris!) got me thinking, too. Surely, my electronic pump also puts out almost double the needed pressure? Interestingly, though, I had none of Chris's problems. But was the engine running a bit rich? The MoT station's exhaust gas analyser seemed to confirm it (8.5% instead of 2.5 to 3.5%). So excessive fuel pressure could be the root cause.

What Chris wrote about the Sytec fuel pressure regulator made it sound like a good solution. Then I came across this discussion [external website] started by a Scimitar owner. He had bought a substandard/fake Sytec regulator that leaked. Now I am planning to invest (sadly twice as much) in the relevant model of Malpassi Filter King instead.

With the pressure turned down to 2.7psi, the mixture may in practice prove to be a tiny bit leaner. So it may slowly pay back in terms of (if you will pardon the expression) fuel economy. Time will tell...
Mk.2 auto, carmine, had me hooked since '81.

Sorry to hear about the potential problem with Sytec but you won’t have that with the Malpassi one

        Cheers

Argh my first breakdown in the stag. Started first time as always on route to mot. Passed flying colours
tester went to drive it off the pit and it didn't start.
          tester for a spark yes
checked fuel cut off and supply to pump all ok
weird thing was I couldn't hear the fuel pump ticking so was starting to think it was pump playing up. I then took off the pipe going to the regulator and pop lots of back pressure. Instantly I thought that was a lot of pressure so I by passed the regulator and hey ho it started.
one thing to remember fitting these gadgets is to service them and change filters as part of the service. I certainly will now. Thanks heaven for my high torque starter I spent ages trying to start the stag and it proved handy as it saved my battery going flat.
