Did it on mine, but I have a BW35, undid the link pipe exhaust clamp, and removed the bolts on the gearbox exhaust mounting, then put a little jacking tool I made (2 small bits of angle and a piece of tube and threaded rod)and jacked the link pipe apart a little, just enough to wiggle out prop out.

...and once you have the shaft off, if you remove the small grub screw at the end on the shaft and fit a grease nipple you can pump grease into the joint.
I don’t know how original my manual o/d exhaust system is but I was able to wiggle and slide the shaft out to the rear. Lying on my back with it so close to my nose that I couldn’t focus on it, it was mainly done by Braille. But then, I didn’t know it wasn’t supposed to be impossible, otherwise I might not have tried......

This is roughly what I had in mind when asking the question. Have since found my prop is OK but the drive shafts are shot. I presume that means the splines are worn out. I was convinced I had a UJ problem either on the prop shaft or drive shafts but all UJs seem ok. Have made a separate post on propshaft cap tightening which is a new one on me.

....and whilst you are under the car with grease nipple & gun, remove the similar grub screw in the power steering rack and give it a shot of grease - but do not over grease!
