Missing temperature compensator adjustment on 1 carb

    Morning all,

on the quest of iradicating that engine cutting out problem for a year and a half now I was going to replace the coil tomorrow and had a preview under the bonnet of what to expect. There is not a lot of room but hopefully I will manage.
However I only noticed now that on the left hand carb the temp. compensator housing is missing completely. What are the consequences of that? Could that contribute to my main engine problem?
I only read about the compensators in the Grampian Stags article (many thanks) last year and thought there is only 1 on the right carb. See I only bought the car late 2014 without any documentation and have to learn fast.

I dont have a stromberg of the bench just now but I would have thought that the missing compensator will not be blocking the hole in the side of the carb, aside from unfiltered air going into the engine it is not going to help the fuel air mixture on that carb.

I could be talking rubbish though

Depends whether the compensator is missing or it is a carb version without. Based on my experience on getting the carbs set up to run sweet, with correct CO etc., I would think starting with two different carbs wouldn't be the best starting point.

well I poste the pic tho show where the Compensator is missing. The holes for fixing are all prominet plus the hole for the plug.
Now I agree without a plug air is getting in I should have no problems when driving after warm up, only when cold and the plug hole should be closed. But that was never my problem.

But the air that has got in over who knows how many years (I have the car since 9/14) must have been contaminated. What could be the damage and is it relating to my engine cut out problems.

On the other hand this is old robust technology. Just spray a bit of carb cleaner in and use cotton wool tip stick to clean it all up will do?

Have pair of Carbs on my bench at the moment so here are 2 photos, one with a compensator, one without. So it it appears it is missing and needs replacing or at worst blocking of until one can be obtained, I'm sure that with it missing you will effectively have one carburettor !!

Closer inspection it looks to me like a missing compensator.
