Guys, took the cam cover off left side and noticed immediately the timing chain has enough slack to knock on the timing cover. Not sure if that's normal.

Thats not good, tensioner not extended or guides slipped, front cover removal to inspect I think.

Cold engine, the hydraulic adjusters fill up when you start and warm up. Not sure if the slack can appear on the long stretch as it naturally hangs off a little anyway.

I do remember very vaguely something about this. Not saying your wrong Nigel just trying to be a top optimist rather than Stag paranoid.

If the adjuster has not been released or has stuck, which happened to me, that can cause slack, you may as well check No. 6 as previously suggested, but a slack chain is as slack chain, you need to find out why.

Don't the adjusters stay in position after the first start up from a rebuild or are they purely hydraulic, I thought they clicked into position once fired up ?

Yes, there is a spring in the tensioner assembly which prevents the tensioner from retracting. I've just taken my heads off and that chain is pretty well tensioned in its resting condition.

I fear there is some confusion here with more modern engines having hydraulic tappets which can rattle for a second or too until they get "pumped up" with oil pressure.

The tensioner is indeed spring loaded on a ratchet which prevents it retracting and the oil pressure keeps the tension and "adjusts" it.

Guys, my chain doesnt rattle on cold start, the tech info I read says it will do that if a problem. Also just as a double check it says we can see the tensioner if we remove cam cover. Buggered if i could see it. Torch out!

Is the chain slack as you said " hitting the cover" if it is, as I said earlier, "a slack chain is as slack chain, you need to find out why"

Have you checked No.6 valve clearance ?

Going to let the professionals sort it out, booked it into Wards next week. New CV drive shafts and brakes serviced at same time. To be honest I've done the timing chains before and checked the valve clearances but never really sure if I've done good as i have no other Stag to compare it with so decided not going DIY this time. Let you know result in a few weeks.
