    ...fail (washer pump operating but no water coming out)

    Bah humbug. My own fault, I checked yesterday but only changed the fluid and washed out the tank, I didn't actually try the pump because...wait for it...I didn't want to get water drops on the paintwork.

    For now i've just slapped on an external pump and will investigate the original one or replace in time but if that's all it's going to fail for then i'm a happy bunny.

    So, after a sunny weekend of re-foaming the passenger seat and several other misc jobs on the Stag, The Director of Household Happiness has now re-assigned me to "finishing the kitchen" duty.

    Seems a bit harsh to fail the car just for that, especially if everything else was ok

      No option but to fail it, however trivial it may seem. That is the rule.
      One of the reasons I use a non-standard bottle with a pump at the bottom - i could never get the pump to prime after it had run out of water, or just drained down after a long time out of use.
      The best bottle I had was from a Marina, because it fitted the same bracket as the original, and had the pump mounted at the bottom. Unfortunately, one day I didn't clip it back on properly, and it fell onto the exhaust manifold. Now I have some random thing, which is strapped on with cable ties.
      Note to self - when I fitted this about 5 years ago, I meant to make a 'bracket adaptor' - get on with it!

        Google GWW506 and you will find a non-return valve that fits on the end of the suction tubing in the washer bottle. This will solve the problem of 'drain-back'.

          Yes indeed, classed as a MAJOR fault though which is quite ironic as my Saab happily freezes its nozzles in bad weather, fails to supply water when you need it most but as long as they work on the nice warm summer day for the MOT, all's good.

          I know the MOT is about to change but a major fault is supposed to be something that's dangerous to drive isn't it? Not something that could make things a bit awkward if a few other circumstances happen to align. We can all chuck some water on the screen if we have to.

          Not fussed though, very quickly rectified and good to go.

          Interested to read that there should have been a non return valve, makes sense, that's probably why it wasn't primed. I'm curious to have a look to see if that's all it was. I was more interested in getting it resolved this morning as I had to be elsewhere this afternoon and tomorrow and only had 24 hours to rectify else re-test.

            My problem was: that made it even more difficult to prime if it had run dry (which was more often through evaporation than actual use).

              The place I got my Stag tested don't charge for re-tests but I suppose they are all different as I found out when checking on prices-they vary a lot.
