    High tick over speed

    Evening All.
    My Stag has a Weber carb conversion and despite the idling screw and cable being relaxed to have no influence on the butterfly positions the idling speed still persists at 1500rpm.
    The geared quadrants are in mesh and the butterflies are closed. The servo vacuum pipe is also good.
    I suspect a leaking gasket below the butterflies but would welcome your comments before I take to the spanners.

    Hi Steve, have you tried resetting the mixture from scratch. The other thing is are you running the stag weber active breather? If so maybe look for small hole or split in the pipe work and check your valves ok. Mind you bet you've done all that, just thought I would chip in try help.

      What's a stag weber active breather?
      I have a breather pipe which connects the air filter to the o/s cam cover and I'm sure it doesn't contain a valve.

        I guess your engine had good compression. If the rings seal is good then you dont have excess blow by gasses and can get away with simply connecting cam cover to air filter. I had a worn engine and the additional crank case pressure caused by the blow by gasses resulted in oil leaks. Solution is breather system to try and emulate the original Stag system that your Stroms had. Your problem is that as your engine wears blow by gasses increase and your weber will cause problems Steve. Your increased tick over may well be because increased crank case pressure has blown a gasket. Do you have an oil leak? New oil leak from cam covers or timing cover?

          I have no problem with crankcase pressure and have checked both throttle and choke cables for fouling the throttle mechanism. The main suspect is now an air leak in either of the gaskets between the carb and pedestal. New gaskets arrived so that's my job for tomorrow.

                Not yet applied myself.
                I received return spring from Stag weber yesterday and will collect o ring from Paddocks tomorrow.
                I'm sure that the problem will be resolved by fixing the inlet leaks.
                I'll report back by the weekend.

                  Steve, just to let you know I tried my car simply venting through the air filter and it worked fine but i read even new built engines had blow by gasses so i tried the car again with the Stag Weber Mk2 active breather and the car was quicker and more responsive. Noticeably so!

                  I am still reverting to Stroms as i like the original look and i am paranoid about the weber giving me issues.(probably Webers ok but that's me), Wards are rebuilding and putting the Stroms back on but once they take the weber off your welcome to try the breather kit see if it helps if you wish?

                    I'm pleased to report that after fitting new O ring, gaskets and return spring the tickover is restored to a respectable 750rpm.
                    Took my old Mum to Lake Vyrnwy this afternoon and on a 50 mile run the Stag performed faultlessly.
