Roger Robertson’s White Stag for sale

So, in the April mag this was for sale by Roger at £12,500 ono and now whoever bought it is selling here https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C990606 for £16,995 and on eBay at an as yet I reached reserve.
This is a guy who has bought the car for a hopefully unfast buck, done nothing to it and Imo leaves a very bad taste.

Lets hope it doesn't get higher than Roger (who incidentally I do not know and have never met) sold it for!

I agree but let's be honest owners are selling good Stags way to cheap! It's undermining the true value and letting dealers and opertunists take a margin. I dont get it no good Stag should be marketed for less than 17k at this point. Why are we still seeing great Stags sold via our owners club sold so low?

For 17k I would exspect a better engine bay

Think about it. A private seller can get what he is happy with, with little chance of comeback if something goes wrong a month or two down the road. A dealer selling the same car has to provide a guarantee of at least three months, probably longer. With the poor history of reliability, backed up by all the doom mongering on public forums (including this one) about poor quality parts, overheating, self-destructing water pumps and jackshafts, etc., etc. It is hardly surprising the dealer has to add a significant markup. Bear in mind also that the dealer will face a fair bit of haggling and likely take less than the asking price, along with the likelihood of a part exchange which will be an unknown quantity. He also has to earn a living, pay rates, wages, insurance, etc., etc.

The advert does state that the engine bay needs detailing. This may be factored into the deal.

I have met Roger. He knows what Stags are worth and will be well aware of all the above.

I note from the advert that the seller is described as PRIVATE, thereby negating and obligation to offer any warranty, I would suggest the purchaser is just flipping it for a quick profit, which is his prerogative.

The description does read well with a ZF conversion alone its value increases irrespective of any minor issues like the engine bay.

But the original seller sold and if someone wants a good car this looks like it would be a good buy, at the right price !!

That may upset Roger, he had the car for around 20 years! Had to fend off buyers for it. yes a bad taste indeed Mike.

I'm more concerned that Roger has sold it as he is a prominent member and hope he's not leaving the club

I think that all Stag owners would sell their cars for more...if they could get it. However much we stamp our feet and explain how the problems have been addressed the public and car buying perception is they haven't, otherwise they would pay more for them.
Look at it from the other angle, you can enjoy a great looking car from a top Italian design studio with a V8 engine and good performance for the price of a new lower market car price range, it's us that's gaining not the people who haven't woken up to the fact yet.
Just be careful how much you spend renovating or developing it, it may take a time to get it back, on the other hand the Electric car market will change perceptions and values in the next 10-15 years, maybe a good idea not to be the wrong side of a +20K investment in a petrol car.

I purchased my boss screen from a chap who just sold his stag. The buyer fell in love with his car saying he had searched everywhere for his dream stag The couple agreed a heavy discount and were pleased their car they had spent years of pleasure was going to good home.
The chap told me his wife cried when he spotted forsale a week later for 8 grand more.
Traders do have costs but some pray on owners good nature to let a car go to good home.
The stags history is not good that's why prices have never reached the heights of other classics but they remain strong. All we can do collectively is to present the choices and facts from past owners and ensure future owners are confident in a fantastic family car and hopefully avoid expensive rebuild costs when things go Pete tong

Anotger effect on our classics is the rise of 80's cars golf gt1 etc Ford's also in all ages .

I think one of the problems with this particular guy is that he has as Nigel says, advertised it in a private capacity so there will be no dealer guarantees, he’s just picked the car up and totally taking the p*ss in my opinion used in his advert Rogers original add almost word for word - he’s giving the impression it is his/has had it a while and clearly is just in it for a fast buck as a private individual and he’s left the engine bay uncleaned exactly as Roger said it was when he sold it!

For what it’s worth, Singaporean as he calls himself has been on eBay before selling cars (catchy name to remember)so he’s not a private individual but a dealer masquerading as one - it appears....

I know Rodger reasonably well, and told him that his car was now on EBay, he was surprised to say the least. On current bids, the trader (or not) ain’t going to make much profit - but then I suppose he’ll say “Reserve not met” and Re-advertise it?

One thing to note, it clearly states 57,000 RECORDED mileage, and I see no mention of it actually having covered 157,000 miles, which a Rodger will confirm it has! Also “new” mini lite replica wheels, they’ve been on the car for the 10 years I’ve known Rodger - unless they are new/the same, but don’t look it.

True it did get regular and extensive use, Rodger never had it as a show queen, it was used and driven spiritedly as I think Rodger would readily admit. Hence the reason the underbonnet appearance may need improving......

In respect of the new seller, I assume Rodger was happy with the price he sold it at, the new seller is taking the risk he’ll make a profit, but purporting to be a private individual is surely naughty if not illegal?

One final point, I believe Rodger is staying a club member.

Thanks for this Ian, it gets more worrying by the hour. On the basis of some of this new information I’ve reported it for listing practices.

A review of the sellers feedback on eBay indicates a member since Oct 2012 with a feedback of only 75,and looking at the reviews that doesn't really show a trader of cars it appears shows a seller of parts (based on value) over more than a year and as a buyer parts rather than cars, (even changing your seller name which you are allowed to do every 30 days ) does not alter your feedback

I am not in any way defending him ( I have no idea who he is ) and perhaps his actions may be unsavoury/unacceptable to some but as I said previously " the original seller sold and if someone wants a good car this looks like it would be a good buy, at the right price !!"

You need a willing buyer and a willing seller to make a deal, both as a seller and a buyer.

I have my owned my Stag for 7 years and have spent fortunes on the various improvements including header tank, External electric water pump, upgrade clutch, polybush suspension, weber carb, reinforced diff nose extension electronic ignition and much more,
Due to poor health, I am frustrated in that I cannot perform the basic work that I used to be capable of.
My Stag has covered 45k miles from new, contains no rot nor rust and I am seriously considering selling her.
I don't know why Stags demand lower selling values than TR6 models when such models are so behind the Stag in evolutionary terms.

",I don't know why Stags demand lower selling values than TR6 models when such models are so behind the Stag in evolutionary terms.
                              Steve"

Because "such models" although of a previous generation are perceived as being in front of the Stag in terms of desirability and reliability.

They are fun to drive, cheap to run and insure and are sold as a sports car that is very reliable, after all James May of the Top Gear team rates it as the "Blokiest blokes car ever" !. The Stag is not perceived as a sports car and the public perception of their reliability despite what we know as owners , is still is somewhat poor. We've all spoke to some "know it all" at the pub who when you say you own a Stag gives you a 15 min diatribe about their faults and poor quality and reliability, any protestations we make is dismissed along the lines of "he would say that wouldn't he, he's stuck with one " !
Enjoy the car for what it gives us, it's just that it will never be fully appreciated as a true design classic, there's just too many bad tales been told about them (truthfully, the factory never got to grips with it) and the tales have grown in the telling.
