    Puff of blue smoke

I've always had oil appear in the core plug as in the photo below. Its definitely engine oil and not gearbox from the BW35 breather. I replaced the metal gauze in the breather last summer and

replaced all the breather pipes. The oil pressure is 25 at idle and about 48 at 2500 - 3000 revs.

as it's been 10 years could be oil seals on the valve stems they tend to harden with age.
some engines can have them changed in situe not sure with the stag.

Hi Jon. I had a strange smoke issue like yours. Turned out to be an oil leak onto the exhaust, as it dropped, it smoked for a few seconds until the drip burnt off. This smoke was pushed out the back and looked like it was from the exhaust. It wasn’t!!
      gooc luck finding the problem.

Jon that oil collecting in the core plugs really strange, my distributor seal (didn't have one!) Was causing oil in the V but could it be finding its way to you core plug maybe. Bet the smokes stem seals as mentioned above.

There aren’t any oil seals on valve stems in Stag engines.

There is no way I can see that oil could flow uphill in to that core plug.. Could it perhaps be a poor fit-it looks very new. There is a lot of oil being flung at it from underneath by the jackshaft .
Or perhaps someone with a warped sense of humour put some there to get you worried.

Thanks Mike - I hadn't realised that there were core plugs into oil ways - I thought that they were only into waterways! That makes sense and is more reassuring. I'll clean it up and wipe some sealant around it and see if it stops. I won't meddle any further and will live with it.
If the blue smoke is the an oil stem valve thing can I just put up with it or will cause further damage? I'm in no position at the moment to contemplate a heads-off rebuild - no garage and not enough money to pay someone else! If the only issue is increased oil consumption then I'll live with it for a bit - especially considering that I'll only do about 2000 miles max a year.

For oil to be working its way up into that core pug, there must be a problem with the fitting of the plug. You say you have replaced the gauze in the breather, I assume that is the stuff inside the cam cover?
the crankcase should be at lower than atmospheric pressure with the engine running with the standard stromberg set up, it helps to stop oil leaks. If you remove the filler cap with the engine running the revs should increase slightly as the engine pulls in extra air if everything is working properly (unless the mixture is extremely weak, then it might stumble instead)

Havn't you also mentioned in a previous post of an "exhaust" smell, could there be a link between your issues ?

A random thought, oil filled coil leaking ????, there is no indication of oil around the core plug.

                    Hi Neil,
Yes, I renewed the gauze in the cam cover. I recently forgot to replace the oil filler cap but remembered after a couple of miles and it was still on top of the air filter. When I replaced it I think that the revs increased slightly - so that would be a weak mixture? Or anything else? There's always something to worry about!

                      Hi Nigel,
I'll check the underside of the coil. With regard to the exhaust fumes I replaced the boot seal and the smell appears to be less and I've also noticed a couple of small holes under the rear seat that I'll plug. Do the large holes under the carpet flaps under the rear seat run to the outside as well?

Not sure about them but don't think so, I'm sire there will be others who have a definitive answer

Checked today and the idle drops and is lumpy when oil filler cap removed - Bugger!

It is meant to do that, it is not a fault. It indicates that the crankcase pressure control system is working as it should.

If the revs don't drop when you remove the oil filer cap, then someone has altered the carburettors to cover up a leak in the crankcase pressure control system.

One less thing to worry about.
