    Turn indicators not working

Hi All, help required, as heading above indicators not working. The hazard lights do work both with ignition on and off. I have wiring for a tow bar do not know if this works, ( on car when purchased and I don`t tow). Fitted an electronic flasher unit a few years ago. Where can fault be?

Check you have power going to the indicator stalk with the ignition on.
mk 1 and mk 2 have different set-ups what age is your car?

Couldnt get mine going, tried everything including new flasher unit. Turned out it was because the wing flasher bulb had gone nothing would flash on that side.

Mine stopped working during the MoT test. It was due to a dodgy connector plug on top of the steering column. It cleared when I raised the column.
It didn't fail. The mechanic went for a coffee while I fixed it!

anything with hazard light as standard fit on the dash takes 12v feed to the indicator circuit from the connector on the back of the hazard light switch.

very simple device - push the plunger in and voltage is sent to the indicator column switch, pull it out and there is no voltage to the column stalk. all sent through a second flasher unit on the back of the relay panel and to the lights and earth.

Simple in design but the copper connectors are exposed to the environment and oxidise with age. simple clean up with electric contact cleaner restored the switch and my indicators to rude health

              Ray.
If all the indicator lamps flash with the hazard switch, that proves there are no problems with their wiring. In which case it has to be either your new electronic flasher, or the hazard switch itself. 9Hopefully), these are very rarely used, so the contacts inside them become tarnished. Switching on the hazard system disconnects the supply to the indicators, and switching it off again does not always re-connect the indicators as it as it should. You may find that repeatedly operating the hazard switch might clean it up a bit inside, and get everything working again. It has worked for me on several occasions.
              Mike.

Thanks Lingen for your positive reply, I assumed that as they flashed when Hazard switch was operated this ruled out the flasher unit, but from what you say this is not the case? If I disconnect the flasher unit and touch the wires together with ignition on should bulbs light up with indicator lever in one of the on positions? If it a yes this would prove faulty flasher unit. I will try repeatedly operating hazard switch,

My car had a tow bar & secondary flasher unit. That second unit is mounted on the passenger footwell parcel shelf behind the card upstand near the footwell, adjacent to the required trailer's secondary indicator warning lamp.

When I was tracing out my wiring turning on the hazard lamps was the best route to check it out. Turned out to be poor connectors on the front side repeater bulbs.

Hi Folks, Thank you for all your help, Problem was the electronic flasher unit. I disconnected it and joined two wires together and bulbs lit up with ignition on, so new unit required after only two years and 3,000 miles. Does any one know of one that gives a louder tick?

You may need to fit a warning buzzer as this is a common problem.

LD Parts supply quality parts http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.ph...d50c7c714a82f9 although they also sell an electronic buzzer http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.ph...d50c7c714a82f9 so it is doubtful their flasher unit is any louder than any other. Most flasher units, in my experience, fail to give a "click" loud enough to be heard clearly, especially with the hood down.

Has anyone found a "clicker" that can be used with an flasher unit as the buzzers can be quite annoying at junctions and traffic lights??

                          I use a buzzer from Stagweber https://www.stagweber.co.uk/node/7/summary

I've hidden it behind the carpet in the passenger footwell, near the relays etc., this deadens the sound sufficiently to stop it being annoying.
