    Road tax and mot

    hi guys ‘ I’ve lost track on this subject ‘as my stag is now 40 yrs old ‘ do I need an mot and road tax , do I have to make any applications to anyone for exemptions if any , what does one have to do to drive the car legally ? Regards Graham

    You have to apply to dvla for historic status to get free road tax...mot exemption has not started yet (not sure of start date) but it's soon. don't know if you have to have historic status on tax to be exempt of mot..that one has not come up...but sure someone will correct me.

      To gain from the free road tax you have to have ‘Historic’ in the classification section of the V5. This should now be possible in the Post Office if you have some form of proof that the car was built before 1st January 1978, and as the last Stag was built on 24th June 1977, that shouldn’t be too difficult.

      The new MOT exemption comes into force tomorrow, 20th May. After this date you will have to declare that the car is eligible for exemption when you apply for your free VED online. The car has to be registered as ‘Historic’ first.

      Driving on the road without fulfilling the above will expose you to the wrath of ANPR cameras.

        ...but for the sake of £50 odd quid why not continue to get the car MOT tested?
        Where else can you get an independent safety check for that money, and the peace of mind that the car is roadworthy if the worst was to happen...

          agree fully...and no questions or vehicle examinations from insurers who may try to wriggle out of paying...or am l being cynical?

            I'm of the same opinion. Got my Stag tested 2 weeks ago for £45 and while it had no advisories he pointed out that one of the steering gaiters was starting to show signs of cracking and there were a couple of surface rust spots on the chassis just in front of the rear wheels where the paint had been knocked off(probably a stone chip). Both issues have now been dealt with. Plus I like the idea of continuity and have old MOTs going back to the mid 1980's. All helps the provenance of the vehicle.

                Hadn't thought of the continuity/provenance angle. Another very good reason to keep on getting MOT tests.

                      I would like MOT exemption, looking at the website it goes together with historical vehicle status and i dont need to do anything else. There is a form v12 to take to a post office but looks more relevant for those who are getting a tax disc from the post office or perhaps asking the post office to give historical status first time.

                      looking at it guys some might want to keep MOT status but i think its lost. When you go for your MOT not sure but i think the computer will say no! Annual service and inspection to confirm all ok and keep a record might be only way.

                        I've just called the DVSA for clarification because it appeared to my befuddled brain that some of the articles published about MOT exemption suggested that "Historic" meant something different to DVLA and DVSA. I was concerned that I might fall foul of ANPR cameras because my MOT will run out before I need to renew my (zero rated) tax, and only at that point could I use the V112 to claim Historic status and MOT exemption - so I was worried that I could have several months of driving illegally with neither a current MOT nor exemption.

                        It seems this fear is misplaced. I was told that the V112 form is only necessary if the vehicle wasn't previously recorded as being of Historic status and the declaration was being made for the first time. The form has been updated so that owners can declare compliance with the "not substantially modified" aspect. ANPR cameras should cross reference the DVLA listing and recognise the vehicle as exempt automatically if it was previously recorded as Historic. Owners will just need to be certain that the "not substantially modified" clause doesn't disqualify them.

                        Like many others, I will still get an annual inspection, but am now reassured that I don't need to worry about the anniversary date.

                              The other day I got my road tax renewal for my car which was registered as Historic last July just after I bought it. However the renewal form makes no mention of any MOT exemptions and actually states "this vehicle requires an MOT certificate". I do intend to carry on getting it tested but I was expecting a choice on the renewal form to opt in or opt out of the MOT. I'm not sure that Swansea is up to speed yet which would make me concerned about the ANPR cameras if I chose not to have a test.
