    Car Purchase Advice

Hi, I’ve looked at five Stags now around 10-14000 value. The best driving one has suspect repairs to wheel arches, but seems fundamentally sound. It also had overheated about a year ago and was losing a little coolant, needing a top up now and then. The expansion bottle was full when I looked. It didn’t get hot on the test drive and went really well.. asking price is 10,000... What do you more experienced Stag Owners think?

You give your location as Brighton, I would suggest you contact the nearest Stag owners group there and ask their advise.
The East Sussex branch give their Co-ordinator's address as bryangreg@talktalk.net.

Expansion tank should not be full. i would suggest caution with that stag....
wheel arches will cost a fair bit to sort and most likely a fair bit of paintwork to match it all up.

Thanks Len, the arches have just been done but I don’t think proper repair panels have been used. I’m worried it’s the sort of repair that will start bubbling up again in a couple of years.

What does a full expansion tank suggest?

cooling system over pressurising (head gasket)? overfilled to hide coolant loss?
            just suggestions.
bottle should be no more than half full hot.

              Paul,
looking to sell my Stag and only just down the road by Portsmouth. Red manualO/drive in good solid condition, the chrome is all good. The body work was done about 15 years ago and still good as is the paint. I have had it 10 years and worked through the mechanics. No issues with overheating. Just refusing to start at the moment, which looks like either ignition switch or starter solenoid, which I hope to sort over the next few days.
ping me an email and I'll send some photos.
              Cheers, Andy

Paul, I'm looking to sell my Stag too but a long way away in Derbyshire. Its a 1974 manual/overdrive in Maple. Its a very solid, un-molested car currently MOT'd (but now exempt) and has never had any overheating problems. I went on a 60 mile run this weekend and the gauge never moved from the middle and the coolant in the expansion tank stayed at halfway. It was partly restored between 1996 & 2000 and has done less than a 1000 miles since, for some of the time since then it was part of a private collection so was rarely used. Original chrome is very good but if I was keeping it I would find a better rear bumper corner. The paint is also good with a couple of small areas that need attention - the metal is solid underneath. Let me know if you want more info or pictures.cheers Rob

Rear wheel arches are trouble. My first Stag back in the 90's had rusty arches and i tried for years to repair but its very skilled due to the size and getting the shape as it should be. I gave up and got some quotes and they were huge! Gave up patched it up and sold it on.
