    Suddenly - no kickdown!

What is it with these cars? 1975 auto with BW35.
Fitted new rad, vac advance - running nicely, idling smoothly at about 600 - minimal clunk when selecting reverse or first. Almost imperceptible gear changes, no clunk when into first at junctions. Beginning to feel really smug then discovered no kickdown when I started to overtake on fast A road. Bit hairy but I squeezed past. Tested it later by flooring the accelerator at 45. Throttle jammed, revs raced, I had to switch off and coast to the side. Opened the bonnet, pushed the throttle spindle back, the pedal seemed to work Ok. I then lifted the coil up in the bracket a bit to make sure that it wasn't fouling the kickdown cable. Tried again but still no kickdown. I assume that I have 2 distinct problems - jamming accelerator and then the kickdown. I'll check the accelerator cable run but any ideas on why the kickdown should suddenly stop working? All the cable end layout and connection st the carb seems ok and I didn't disturb it at all.
    thanks

sounds like kick down cable that runs from carb is broken.
