    Help with expansion tank

Since this is a modification, I suppose it will go here.

I have a header tank from Chris Spain. EJ Ward has a header tank too. I've looked at photos of both and the plumbing look different for both. EJ Ward seems to use the top radiator hose to fill the system. Whereas CS setup uses the heater to water pump cover to fill the system. EJW uses the original expansion connector, whereas CS uses an elbow connected to the top radiator plug. The original expansion pipe is closed off.

With CS' system, I'm having trouble getting the threaded elbow to line up in the correct direction at the top of the radiator to connect a hose to it. The elbow is facing the bonnet.
Instead of using the threaded elbow, I'm thinking of using a Tee in the top radiator hose to use as a expansion to feed back into the tank. Will with be OK?

I have an email to Chris. but wanted to get other peoples thoughts.

Hi, You could put plumbers tape on the tread of elbow and do up to a point where the elbow is facing the right direction or put fiber washers on elbow so it faces the right way when done up.

Sujit, i fitted a header tank but plumbed as a high level expansion tank. Main pipe runs to a connection into the bottom of the rad, Smaller pipe is into a connection made as high as possible in the neck of the rad. Old expansion pipe is blanked off.

        All original pipework is unaltered.

That is the way my Volvo tank is plumbed in, and I had it on good authority from a Stag expert with much more knowledge than I, that it is the best way to fit a header tank. Much simpler, and has done the job efficiently for about 12 years and over 40,000 miles.

I did use two fiber washers. I will try adding a few more. CS got back to me and said use more tape, Over here state side the tape is more commonly known as PTFE tape.
The problem is the elbow has parallel threads. Tapered threads would have worked better here.

Using a T in the top rad. hose also works.

              Something else to consider.

Are you planning on fitting an electric water pump, which involves moving the alternator, or perhaps moving the alternator anyway?

If so check the position of the lower fitting on the Stag-Weber tank which is fouled by the newly moved alternator ( and maybe lots of other reservoirs). It's not a serious problem on my car, just needed the outlet removing and re-attaching at the front of the reservoir.

Indeed a slightly different outlet on the tank would be fine with or without a relocated alternator.

Using the existing feed pipe that goes to the expansion bottle when fitting a header tank is not a good idea, as the pipe extends some way down into the r/h side of the radiator. As a result, any air in the cooling system will become trapped in the top of the radiator above the level of the bottom of the pipe. To avoid this, the return pipe should come from just under the radiator filler plug at the level of the top hose. It is not difficult to drill and tap a hole there to take a small spigot for it. This will ensure that the whole system is always full to the top. If the feed hose goes to the bottom of the radiator, or as mine does, to an extra connection on the metal pipe between the two bottom hoses, this will create a small constant flow of coolant into and out of the header tank once the pump speeds up a bit, just as exists on modern installations. The system can then constantly purge itself of any air.
                Mike.

                          John,

Mine is like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...14402&_sacat=0 There are similar ones without the level sensor. I got mine from a scrappy and cut the mounting tag off the inner wing of the donor car to mark a mounting bracket.
