Try by-passing the dimming rheostat; it could be causing too much voltage drop to all the instrument lights.

Have thought about that as I am considering fitting LEDs and I assume they won't work with the rheostat. I will not be able to look at it now for a few weeks though, but thanks for the thoughts.

        Ressurecting….

Does the manual have an unused wiring spur for the auto selector illumination? (Iirc it does)

Question is regarding an illumination power source for heater control…. Illumination Shroud & or new illuminated panel that I’m trying to make available.

Auto has the selector lamp to ‘piggy - back’….. but does the manual have something similar nearby?

        Tia.

Can't you take a supply from the fag lighter light?

I might be wrong, but ISTR that there is a spare output terminal on the panel rheostat. If so, that would be adjacent to where the heater control light would be mounted.

That's what I've found ... there are two double spade connectors. The 12v input from the 12v supply goes to one connector (doesn't matter which) and two output wires go the other, one on each spade. One output wire feeds the instrument lights and the other feeds te cigar lighter and selector illumination (auto box only).

I installed the dimable instruments LEDs as supplied by one of the usual suspects, and these worked perfectly with the rheostat on the bench but not in the car. I suspect this was due to having still having conventional bulbs for the cigar lighter and selector positions, which are in parallel with the LEDS once they're connected to the rheostat.

I was going to test this by moving the feed to these from the output side to the input side of the rheostat using the spare input spade, but haven't go round to it yet. This may restore the dimable LED function, but of course the cigar lighter and selector bulbs would not longer dim as per original. Meantime still on the look out for dimable LEDs for these positions as well but haven't found any yet.

Somewhat puzzled that later Stags need to have the cigar lighter and selector bulbs in series to reduce brightness - with this set-up are they no longer wired to the output side of te rheostat?

While we are on auto selector light brightness. Range Rover classic just uses a 24v bulb for the auto selector.

Seems to be a whole lot easier way in which to resolve the problem
