    MOT exemption

ive looked on the dvla website to see if we have to register our cars for mot exemption. I can't really find any thing for mot only for tax. My car is tex exempt. All I can see on the dvla is if the car is built or registered 40 years ago it's mot exempt.

does anyone know differently? Do we have to register for mot exemption in th same way we do for tax or are they linked?

    Cheers

    Hi

If not already done, at the post office you need to have them declare the car 'Historic', and then the system automatically updates to reflect that the car is over 40 and is tax exempt and now an MOT is no longer required.

If you have declared the car historic, when you take your tax form to the post office they should stamp it for free and not require proof of MOT. This is what happened to me last week.

This is of course subject to you not having 'substantially changed' the car over the last 30 years. Full explanation here:

Vehicle tax exemptions and MOT exemptions for vehicles built or first registered before 1984.

    and here

PS as per Richard's post below, my paper tax reminder did say the car needs an MOT. The post office computer however did not require it.

As I said on another posting I got my tax renewal a couple of weeks ago and there was no mention on that of any exemption or a box to tick to apply for such status. It simply said "this vehicle requires an MOT certificate" which I do have and intend to continue getting. I don't think that the DVLA have caught up with the recent changes yet which of course helps nobody

I rang DVLA a few weeks ago, I was told, if the car is currently taxed, nothing needs to be done regarding the mot until the tax renewal is due, then the option to declare mot exemption is available.

The option only appears if the car does NOT have a current MoT and has a taxation class of "Historic Vehicle". I have just taxed a classic (not a Stag but it is exempt) - it was previously on a SORN. I have just had it MoT'd and when I taxed it online it just went straight through - no questions or options on the MoT front. The Vehicle Enquiry shows the correct Tax and MoT expiry dates. A couple of other classics which are sorn'd and whose MoT has run out now show "no results returned" under the MoT section where as a modern car will have a red box saying "MoT expired" and the expiry date.

The problem is my MOT is due on July 2nd but tax isn’t due to next March. I’m due to go to Le Mans next week and don’t want to risk not getting an MOT and driving illegall!

suppose I’d better book it in for an MOT on Saturday if a slot is available!

If your taxation class on the V5C is "Historic Vehicle" then you do not need to get it MoT'd, it is exempt as long as it has not been substantially modified etc. You only need to tick the declaration when you come to tax it. Provided the car is roadworthy you will be legal.

Personally I will continue to get mine MoT''d, can't see a reason not to.

I did mine online, although tax runs out in October I just taxed it again, website just says you may loose some money because tax will start from 1st June (being free it makes no difference), then as you process it says this car is eligible for MoT exemption, just tick the box to confirm, job done.

An interesting point, if like me you have your car regularly serviced by a Stag specialist every year which includes checking safety critical items, is it really necessary to have an MOT provided there is evidence of the service being carried out? Can’t see the need for the additional check which is really repeating what the specialist is carrying out for 300 quid + VAT

Does the service include all the checks in a mot, I very much doubt it. I would put money on the fact that the brakes are not tested on a rolling road. This to me is one of the more important tests. The brakes are tested beyond normal on road use and can show faults, or impending faults, and give more confidence that they will function as they should in an emergency. They also check all suspension joints for play etc. Again I doubt it is done in the same way in a service. An mot is not a service and a service is not an mot. I accept that an mot is not perfect and only shows the car is good at the time of the test, but at least it is a thorough annual safety check. For the sake of £40 or so I can't see the issue. But it is your car and your choice.

I agree, Roger. Having been submitting cars for MOTs for over 45 years, and for most of those tests been the 'in-car-assistant' for the tester (to save dragging another mechanic away from his work), there is little in common between the MOT and a regular service. The simple, and cheapest, option is to get the MOT and service done at the same time. Most garages will give a discount for this. As I do my own servicing, the MOT is the independent check that gives me peace of mind, and back up.

The point I was making was that having taxed my car at the post office there wasn't any box on the form to tick. It may be different online but the tax form you get through the post hasn't caught up with the changes brought in a couple of months ago

Personally I think you're wise to choose that option. I'm the same and think £45 is a small price to pay for peace of mind. When I had mine tested in May he spotted couple of surface rust spots just in front of the rear wheel(probably a stone chip) and also that the N/S steering gaiter was showing signs of cracking. There was no advisory but both items have now been attended to.

It's a crazy idea . I told my friend who runs a vw garage and he couldn't believe it
it won't be long till cars are laid up then brought out at the weekend with seized brakes , vermin damage and general leaks etc It's the inocent people they hurt that's the worry.
The law is there to cover these idiots not the very clever people on here who clearly know what they are doing.
Cleary another classification should have been created .
They are probably to busy with brexit
