steering wheel starts to shake badly ,drop down to fifty all ok ,speed up it comes back,Ive had a quick look nothing obvious . ideas please
cheers Alex
It sounds like you've lost a wheel balance weight, probably front, have the wheel balance checked. See if you can see any clean areas on the wheel where a weight may have been.
Alex.
It could be "Many Things", as Clarkson would say. I would check track rod ends and bottom ball joints for wear first.
The bottom joints are best tested with the wheels off the ground and the suspension hanging free. Then engage the steering lock to hold the rack from moving. Now grip each front wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and try hard to make the wheels turn left and right. If you can still see the joints while you are doing this (!) any vertical or horizontal wear will soon be seen.
Track rod end wear can be seen by turning the steering wheel a bit from side to side with the wheels on the ground.
If they are all ok, I would check the wheel alignment, the front tyres for any distortion, and their balance.
This sort of problem is why I believe we should continue to get an MOT test done on our Stags every year.
Mike.
