    Warning Lights Cluster

    Hello again,
    please would anyone who has changed their dashboard instruments / warning lights to led tell me which bulbs in the warning lights cluster may be changed to led type and which ones cannot (presumably because their resistance is need for activation). I have already changed the bulbs that illuminate the instruments to led. Many thanks in anticipation.

    I believe it is not advisable to change the IGN light to LED (there was a recent post about that).

    But could you tell me the correct LED sizes (codes) for all dash lights please.

      As Hans says, it's easiest if the IGN light is kept as an incandescent type as it's part of the initial alternator excitation circuit. LED lamps are polarity sensitive and within the cluster there are holders with positive pins and some negative. Best ones I found when experimenting a few years ago (there's a post detailing this) came from http://www.bettercarlighting.co.uk/ . Gil does kits to suit either Mk1 and Mk2 (there are differences). If you've still got original bulbs in there, you'll need to open up the bulb holders a touch (same is needed for currently-available standard replacements).

      Well worth doing the upgrade - you stand a better chance of seeing when your indicators are still on

        I did the LED upgrade to the cluster, through Gil at bettercar lighting (very helpful) a while ago. I changed all the bulbs and found that the IGN light only goes off once about 3000 rpm is achieved. A quick blip on the throttle does the trick. It's all to do with the "exciter" circuit.

          I upgraded some of the light cluster bulbs and found all worked well except the IGN bulb. I also tried to change the instrument lights LEDS but without success. They were supplied by ‘classic car LEDs’ for this purpose but they don’t illuminate, help appreciated, Andy

            Hi

            I did my entire dash and cluster with bulbs supplied by Classic Car LED's. The Warning Cluster I found a bit tricky, so as Duncan (from Classic Car LEDs) offers an install service, I sent the cluster to him and he did it. IGN one included, works fine and just needs a blip to get the circuit activated. Very bright and worth the swap.

                Thanks for the replies Chaps,
                I think that the best option would be to buy the kit from Classic Car LEDS, but I'm not sure about cutting the bulb holders so I shall probably ask them to fit also!
                Looks as tho' they'll stay standard bulbs for a while whilst I'm using the car during the summer.

                  l got a whole car worth of led's from Gill at better car lighting from memory 3 of the cluster are positive earth and the rest negative. but he supplies full details the requires resistor and a drill bit to open out the lamp holders, although l used a dremmel as thin copper and a drill bit don't mix well.
