They were only fitted on federal Stags for the USA and went in the glove box,
Hi Tony,
Can you explain why the decals have 185HR14 as the tyre size when, apparently, Federal Stags were fitted with 185/70HR14 tyres? Not doubting your knowledge, just confused by this anomaly.
BTW, Ive only ever seen them placed as described in post #2 above.

For some reason, I can't see the decal, but I did have a 185 HR 14 Michelin as spare tire which appeared to be original. The diameter of the tire was about 25.9 inches. I think the diameter of a 185HR14 is about 23.5" I do have a decal on the glove box lid. I'll take a photo of it and post it here

Original tyres fitted were 185/14 or 175/14 on later cars, I don't think 185/70/14 were available in the 70's and definitely not available in the 60's when the Stag was designed, as far as I am aware profiling of tyres didn't come in until the late 70's early 80's. I have never see any reference to 185/70/14 tyres in any handbooks or BL literature.

Tony,
The early ROM and early (up to at least 1973 - that includes the one in my car) Stag Handbooks state that tyres were either Michelin 185HR14 or Goodyear G800 185/70HR14. As you say, Stags were fitted with 175HR14 during the last model year.
According to James Taylor in The Original Restorers Guide P65, a batch of approx 30 Stags were fitted with the Goodyear 185/70HR14 tyres in March 1973 normally supplied only on Federal cars. He goes on to state (on P83) that the tyres supplied on Federal cars were always Goodyear G800 Grand Prix types in 185/70HR14 size.
Now I am aware that build records are somewhat 'iffy', but he must have got that info from somewhere.
