I want to buy a Stag. How do I make sure its Good!
Okay I'm back with answers that raise more questions.
Guy has owned it for only 18 months but has a genuine reason for sale.
The suspension, mounting corrosion problem was before his time so no info there
Unknown who did the full bare metal repsray.
Brought privately from previous owner Phil from Worksop. Head gaskets failed month after purchase (That's my sort of luck) and why I'm asking questions)
Has been previously worked on by Yorkshire Triumphs
Local garage who did the heads and gearbox for current owner is Miles of Leverton
What does that tell me and what other questions should I be asking???????
See my previous post and look at the ones at the back of the club magazine. I would walk away from this one, too many unknowns for a "novice" and I fear it could turn into a money pit for you. That is not to say the current seller is not being honest, just that he hasn't had it long enough or used it enough to know and as I said the MoT history to me shows a pattern of poor maintenance over many years.
Roger
Now Stagless but have numerous car projects
So many cars, so little time!
Roger, you are thinking with your head and thanks, I had thought that a bare metal respray 2013/14 would have put a 40 year old car back to being fully structurally sound so there should be no corrosion issues 2 years on. I suppose there are full bare metal resprays and there ar full metal resprays and this is not the latter...... If you get the reference.
I do look at what's advertised through the club and agree that they will probably have been more cared for. In fact they are often more realistically priced. Unfortunately when I wasn't in a position to buy there was choices, now there's nothing that grabs me. I suppose I must be patient.
I think marshman sums it very well, if it's reasonably close to you it would be worth going just to gain experience but not worth travelling a long distance. Looking at closer cars at lower budget would give you a good grounding.
Not that I am encouraging time wasting!
Steve
On the face of it it looks quite nice but the rear wheel camber is slouching (too negative) to me and I’d be worried about the lack of more complete history at that sort of money.
As others say you need to see it, check all the known rust points with a good magnet and drive it, check all the available paperwork and in my opinion if it’s as good as it seems, start at no more than £10k
If it were nearer me I’d be happy to take a look with you but it’s just a bit too far I’m afraid...
Again thanks to all, the excitement has passed and I have gained a little more knowledge. If it had been a lot closer I would have gone and looked but it would have been with a lot more restraint. Although I doubt I'd of noticed it 'Slouching' Thanks for that one Mike.
Steve: I have pm Zee1 for details but think Ive just seen it already on eBay.
