    Carb spindle seals

Can you replace the spindle seals on stromberg carbs without pulling the whole carb apart. Drove it out last week end after servicing the charcoal filter and replacing the fuel pump and the evap lines and found the right hand carb rear leaking at the spindle seal. Car was running rough and I did not drive it far but as soon as I saw the fuel leaking back to the garage. New seals ordered and any advice welcome.
    Thanks Stuart

I am fairly sure you cant replace the spindle seals without pulling the throttle shaft out first as there seems no way to extract them with the shaft in place. And that of course requires the butterfly etc etc to be removed first with the proper proceedure. There might be others here that may know a way. It would be great if you could!
I note you have 'serviced' the charcoal filter Stuart; I assume being a USA car you would have the earlier evaporative loss system and just replaced the canister air filter but I would be interested to see which one you have on your car and if you did anything else to service it as I am at that part of my rebuild of the vehicle.
Not sure there is much you can do with the latter canisters fitted to my car. When it was on the road the canister became saturated and was giving me grief in easily hot starting the vehicle. I couldnt wait for it to 'dry' out so I bought a GM product that was a close fit and everything worked well. So now replacing back this original later style canister. I did pull it apart but not much to see or do from what I gather. The only thing I can think of is replacing that portion of 'deteriorated' black foam you see on my photo which may have caused the canister in not being able to vent properly in the first place?

Thank you for the feedback, I did think that the carb will have to have the spindle removed but it never hurts to ask. In regards to the canister it was made by Coopers and is basically charcoal held in place by a mesh screen. I have some pictures that I will post up you can unscrew the one end the very carefully lever out the plastic retainer once you get the charcoal out put in on a metal plate or a flat metal cookie sheet or baking tray and get a blow torch and fan this over the charcoal and it will burn of any trapped vapor.
You do not want the charcoal to light so easy does it the vapors will burn of and you reuse the charcoal. If you have the same type as I have there is a spring assembly that will hold the screen up about 3/8" and it will not allow you to gt all the charcoal back in.
I used a small wire tied it to the screen and fed it back out via the hose connection and pulled the screen assembly back in compressing the spring and allowing me to replace all the charcoal then the top screen and the plastic retainer then screw on the top. I hope this helps you.
I used a piece of white Scotch Brite pad for the foam replacement.
