    Grill speaker

I appreciate that this has been discussed before many times but I am interested to hear what others have fitted (and still available of course) when it comes to a speaker in the dash grill. Not the big retro version, just straight forward 6 x 4 or maybe 2 smaller ones that can be adapted.

Any advice or even better, photos appreciated

    Cheers

One of the guys on the sprint forum, did a way with the speaker and installed a sat nav,as the speaker grill poped up, the sat nav was attached to the under side of the grill , looked very neat

two tiny 10cm dual cones fitted quite neatly under the cover. I had to drill a couple of holes but they cannot be seen with the cover in place.

How about a Bluetooth speaker, freestanding and linked to a suitable head unit or your mobile, all removable.

          That's what I do.
I have a cylindrical twin cone speaker around 2" diameter and 5ish" long. It sits on the shelf in front of the gear lever and sounds good even at motorway speeds with the roof down
I also still have my original dealer fit head unit and centre speaker for that fully retro sound..........

Remove old speaker upwards, towards windscreen.

Remove glove box lid then fit new 7"x5" dual voice coil speaker through the side of the glove box (easier than you might imagine!!!!) Refit speaker grill.

Great sound, takes half an hour and costs less than £50 with delivery. No other parts used, no cutting or other tricky stuff.

or if you want to spend £20 extra the same thing from EJW.

Alan, how did you attach the speaker - the original speaker in my Stag is 6 x 4 inches, so the dual cone speaker won't fit without drilling/cutting the dash. As i didn't want to do that, I use Velcro to secure the speaker to the dash where the old speaker was.

On mine, a Retrosound twin coil speaker is wedged in place with high density foam packing (not polystyrene between it and the air vent trunking. The packing has got more structural integrity and a smooth surface - came from the stuffing a tablet case had in it). Saved drilling additional holes in the dash top. Have heard some Stag owners have had to modify the air trunking, but mine had a natural 5mm or so gap. Manufacturing tolerances?

As I started the job I tried to fit from above, then I realised it fits below the steelwork, not above as the existing speaker. Whipped the glove box out and the speaker fitted beautifully, slid in, no play, firmly in place, no need to pack or secure.

Only thing to check is that the long fixing pegs (white plastic) on the existing grill do not penetrate too far and damage the speaker. When in place the speaker can be re-positioned an inch or so forwards / sideways to avoid the pegs.

As I wrote originally I had no need to cut, or modify anything on my MK2 Stag.

I did same, but used a couple of black cable ties to hold the position. The only tricky bit is attaching the 2 sets speaker wires but even that was ok. But I am going to try a blue tooth speaker in the car as i think it might sound better. On my wife's MX5 she has speakers in the headrest, wouldnt be so difficult for us Stags to do and that gives audible sound at high speed roof down.

Did you connect both channels to the speaker or just one side? I ask as it implies you can but for the sake of the agro, my friends has just one feed coming up from the consul as he was using an older type speaker.

                      Cheers

Has the radio got stereo? If not, then it doesn't matter if you only connect to one channel on the speaker. If the radio is stereo, if you don't connect both channels, then you'll get incomplete sound, unless your radio has a "Mono" switch. Should be easy enough to use the existing speaker cable to pull through a pair. Recommend you pay attention to the polarity markings on the radio and speakers to get the best sound in stereo

Have ordered the speaker and should have great fun as the wires just for one channel come up and they are both black and no stripe. Its a Kenwood head unit and I can get it out so best to check wiring and look for that other channel wiring.
                          Thanks

If you're getting the Retrosound dual cone speaker, mine came with a pair of connecting cables which were polarity marked.
