    Rear Fog Light Switch Position

I am planning to fit a rear fog light as my 1973 car doesn’t have one. I think that later cars had them as standard? Does anyone have a picture of where the standard switch is sited as I would like to make it look like an original fitment.

    Thanks in advance.

carboy. I believe some markets with foglights had a specific master light switch with a fog light position.

This is the switch position in mine.
it uses a heated rear window switch and the warning light is the red one below the choke.
factory fitted as far as l know.

REAR fog lights are only obligatory on a vehicle first used on or after 01April 1986, manufacturers started fitting them earlier in anticipation of the change in vehicle lighting regulations.

Therefore Stags were not fitted with one and there is no legal requirement to have one, it is not a MOT requirement (if yours is not MOT exempt) If you choose to fit one there are specific requirements of where it should be fitted.

        Here is the regulation http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1...hedule/11/made

          Thanks all,

I am doing the RBRR 2018 in October, including two full nights of driving. I am assuming that the weather won’t be like it is at the moment, most likely in the Northern Counties, the Highlands of Scotland and Wales with mist/fog/frogs/locusts etc.

I thought it would be prudent to warn all those other behind me of our presence, rather than wait for the blazing headlights in the rear screen and the inevitable crunch etc., never mind the Con & Use Regs .

That being the case l would suggest you have a chat with Gill at better car lighting and go for a set of led lamps on the rear.
bright and the rear, fog, brake, reverse lamp combination he provides would be perfect in my opinion.
no trade link with them, just a very pleased customer.

Plus one for better car lighting. Easy to fit kit and doesn't spoil the look of the rear of the car. The extra brake lights also help for safety.

The lighting switch with a FOG position was wired to the front of the car. Many cars have that wire in the loom, I used mine to route the feed from my auxiliary switch to the front fog lights and a separate wire to the rear fog light so both front and rear light up at the same time.

No rear fog light wiring on a Stag. Only for front fogs. Red/orange wire. Mk1 Stags had a Fog light position on the master light switch for front fogs but this could be used for rear or both.
If you have rear fog lights fitted, whether mandatory or not, they must work for the MOT, otherwise it is a ‘Fail’.

Yup Dave I get that, not fitted yet. Thing is the car is over 40 years old, so no MOT. Not that I would set out to drive an unroadworthy car of course. Quite happy to add rear fog light(s) to the wiring loom. I have just finished looming up an EFi system to a previously carb’d classic car (not Stag).

You cant use the fog position on the light switch for rears as it turns the main beams off. I believe that was required back then

Correct. Forgot that ‘feature’. It made a lot of sense for front fogs. It was common practice back then, and should be now. Using main headlights in (proper) fog reduces visibility further as the lights reflect off the water droplets in the air. Using low down fog lights doesn’t create as much glare back into the driver’s eyes and picks out the kerbs and cats-eyes better.

I checked out Better Car Lighting and emailed a query, I like their idea of doubling up using the existing light units, very clever. Have ordered today, thanks for all your help everyone.
