    Ignition key doesn't return

Hi all, to start the car I have to keep the key in as I start it. If I didn't do that the key would just turn and stay and not return and not start. Can the return of the key after starting be fixed or is it a new ignition barrel?....or worse? Thanks in advance. Mark

If memory serves me right, the spring part is not in the key barrel. Its in the bit at the end where the wires go. U can remove this with two small pozi drive screws , but I dont think u can open it.

Yes you are right Sujit. The actual ignition switch (the thing with the wires coming out of it) has the spring that returns the key. Not sure if it is serviceable. They are available as a replacement. I would think the key barrel if it is not clean or very free moving may put pressure on this switch.

It is possible to dismantle a ignition switch but it is swine to get back together, for the cost of a replacement that, I think, would be the better option if that is the the cause of the problem.

If I remember correctly it is not recommended to lubricate a steering column lock with "wet" lubricants (WD40 etc.)as these can attract and hold dirt becoming gummed up and preventing the tumblers from operating correctly, dry graphite powder spray or similar would probably the best option if the barrel if stiff.
