    Starter woes

I've been having the occasional starter 'click' or sometimes 'no click' that others on the Forum have also had. Checking the past posts for wisdom, I decided to clean up the electrical connections to improve the flow of wiggly amps between the ignition key and flywheel. There's a boat-shaped junction box down by the gearbox (in my case the ZF 4-speed) which was quite cruddy. All of the contacts cleared up, but the connection box is well past its best, and won't stay closed. I've wrapped it in cable ties and tape, and all now works well, but I'd obviously like to make a better and reliable repair. Does anyone know where I can can get a new connection box of either the same type, or better version?

Also, there's four wires on one side of the connector, and five on the other; anyone know what the redundant wire is for?

    Many thanks,

    Dave

Try Autosparks for a new connector pair and pins/ sockets. Doubt if they can offer a boat-shape, but as long as it has the right number of pins (or more) then you'll be OK. Useful to have the correct crimp tool for long-term reliabilityl.

Thanks for the pointer Jonno; I've ordered these waterproof connectors from AES https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co..../43/category/7 in the hope that they will keep the water and other crap out.

            Regards,

            Dave

That's good - I hope that solves your problem, though if not, it'll still be better in the long term. (Presume you've got a 2-way and a 3-way so there can't be incorrect connections in future?)

                Hi Dave,

The 3-terminal version is good for replacing the poor quality connection in the Lumenition wiring if you have it fitted.

Here's a photo of a Mk2. The white with purple wire is split later in the loom.

                    Hello Dave,

I've got a 123 dizzy waiting to be fitted; just waiting for enough bravery on my part to do the swap & programming!

Thanks again Jonno. I've ordered two-way connectors, but I do see your point about incorrect connection. As I'm too old to be under the car too often, once connected, they will hopefully stay correct. Maybe I'll colour code them!

Why not wrap them in self amalgamated tape once fitted..or spray well with silicone grease to keep the moisture off...or both!

                          Hello Phil,

I've done that to bodge the connection block that's currently on the car, but being a natural pessimist, I know it will let me down eventually under less than ideal conditions! A new sealed connection is peace of mind, so that I can go back to concentrating on the temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge or unexplained new noises!

owning a stag for the last year has proven to be a series of NEXT JOBS but that's why we drive 40 year old cars..us owners are a similar or older age...are we as reliable as our cars?
