What is the purpose of the Temperature Compensators

There are quite a few sites detailing how to adjust them, but what purpose do they serve?

I know when they open, they let in more air into the carb, (known as by-pass) but what does this really do in lay-man terms please and why?

They are there to regulate the air/fuel ratio as the body of the carburettor changes temperature.. They really only make any difference at tick over, and help to keep emissions under control. When they are working correctly, it is possible to get a steady low idling speed, which is good for automatics, and fuel consumption generally.

There is a BL Dealer training S1040 booklet in the technical section that gives a good description.

a mate of mine owned a BL dealership when the stag was released..he tells me that if they worked they were left alone...but when they played up they just disabled them..and during the warranty period this happened to 8 out of 10 cars.
