Front struts

I'm getting the car ready for the National day and noticed that the rubber gaiters had disintegrated and needed replacing. I've taken the strut out and am about to replace the gaiter. My question is how do l check the strut ? Should it be easy/hard to push in/out. On the car when pushed down they bounced about 1 1/2 times which l believe is good.

that's about right, don't want any less or they could be on the stiff side and transfer the bumps.

Ah thanks Phil. I have them off the car to replace that dam gaiter yet again, and give the a good clean and repaint. I was just wondering how they should be when off the car. And don't get me started on why the hell the new tops don't come complete with those 2 frigggging bushes already pressed in......grrrrr
