Three tips: BMW brake light switch, Panel Wipe anti-grease, R&R alloys and tyres

Just thought I would try and put something back into the Forum having received lots of useful tips over past 5 years.

    1. The standard 'Lucas' plastic brake light switches are pretty useless as I have had two fail. This BMW part fits easily, much more robust, and IMO is worth the extra fiver or so:

    2. If you get stuff such as tar, excess Waxoyl etc on paintwork then Panel Wipe is the answer. Used by the paint bodyshop trade to remove grease etc before re-painting. I have used 'full fat' skull and crossbone solvent type from specialist paint bodyshop supplier. Some are fast drying, some slower. Wipe on and wipe off in two motions to loosen then clear oil. Halfords offer a less dodgy one, don't know if it works.

    3. R & R Alloys. I decided I had had enough of trying to balance my standard alloys so bought four 15'' x 6'' minilight alloys from R & R in black and silver, Stag specific sizing. Plus decent Yokohama tyres 195 x 65. Just over £600 the lots with delivery and free chrome nuts. Tyres were £54 each. They look good IMO, are easy to balance, fill the wheel arches, and make the car and steering feel better planted. R & R good to deal with. Time will tell how well the finish lasts. More info and choice of size and colour online here: https://www.randr-alloys.co.uk/

All FYI and not on any commission etc!

I make up my own panel wipe solution, 20% isopropyl alcohol, 80% distilled water, in a spray bottle.

I’ll second the 15” x 6” minilite type alloys, although mine are gunmetal grey, with polished rims. I’ve had them now for about 5 years with Avon ZV5 tyres, and even the wife noticed the difference in ride comfort. I have one wheel where damp has now penetrated the rim lacquer, but it’s so small an area to be mostly un-noticeable.

ps Mine were from Midland Wheels but probably same manufacturer?

Just ordered up a new brake light switch; I've got through several Lucas switches in my 20-odd years of ownership. Thanks for the tip, Paul.
