    Amount of oil on timing chain top sprockets.

    Hi again, I don’t know if I have got Stag paranoia starting but I have another question I can’t find an answer for.
    How much oil should be on the timing chain and cam sprocket when the oil filler cap is lifted off after the engine has been running a few minutes? Should it be very obviously wet with oil or fairly dry? The oil pressure is ok.

    When mine is idling with the oil cap off, oil is clearly visible, if reved it will throw oil out through filler hole.

      Here's my experience. If you have a timing tensioner that has the oil hole squirting oil directly on the chain. you will see quite a bit off oil on the crank sprocket. If you use the timing chain tensioner which squirts oil down at 90 degrees, then way less. I do not recommend this later type of tensioner.

        Yes I would agree with that! I have noticed quite a difference of oil flow between the 2 types. I could not find the first type to suit the single chain Sujit mentioned with the oil hole directly squirting on the chain and had to grind down a pair of Dolomite Sprint ones to fit. They are too big as they are designed to take the double chain of the Sprint and need to be ground down.

          Thanks. I only seem to get a small amount of oil mist on my hand wether it is on tick over or wether I rev it. The splash guard perhaps stops a bit coming out. But having said that I can see plenty of oil on the cam bearing cap if I shine a torch in the oil filler hole.
