    North Sea.

Hi all, I've just been watching Andrew Marr's "History of Britain", part of it showed something of the history ofNorth Sea oil.The death rate was horrifying, the conditions appalling. From what I've gleaned, there are some oil men on here, and I would like them to put their heads above the parapet for a round of applause, it strikes me that the risks are not much less now than they were then, these are brave men,and I would like to say thank you ! :dude: Martin.

It's not all that bad guy's, just the way they treat us as far as our terms and conditions are concerned. The way some of these company's have treated their workforce over the years is appalling. No wonder the miners were so militant.

Piper Alpha was a big turnng point in safety. Many millions has been spent improving Fire & Gas detection systems and also permit to work systems as well as attitudes to safety. Even a minor scratch is investigated to try and prevent it happening again.

Many onshore building sites wouldn't put up with the controls we have. HSE inspectors can turn up, unannounced, at helicopter check-ins and insist on travelling to a particular installation to carry out an inspection. They can also stay as long as they like. We are a cpative audience. If an HSE inspector turns up at a building site, everyone departs by the back door!

Having said that, Mike is right about some employers, particularly Drilling companies

Dave, the catering guys don't get much of a life either. Certainly would not put up with what I have seen them have to put up with, especially during the hook up days
