Only speaker the car had provision for was in the dash grille/cavity of course. That certainly wont satisfy you if you are an audiophile, even with some of the after market options available for this cavity but many are quite happy with this. If you are looking for a very basic sound the attached photos I found some time ago of a ready made 'cap' on the market provides one option for the rear pockets but of course you loose this storage.
A lot depends on your budget. I am up to about 1,500 pounds for stereo parts/components only and counting..You do not have permission to view this gallery.

The acoustics aren't well suited for audiophile quality anyway! I've had speakers fitted to the rear cubbies in mine and find that due to how close the seats are to the body, it sounds like only the opposite speaker is working, certainly with the roof down. Thinking I might get a twin-cone unit fitted under the dash grille but I understand working around the heater is a bit of an arse ache.

I have put the ej ward twin speaker under the grill. It's a bit of a fiddle and where the mounting holes didnt marry up i used thin cable ties. It does the job well when stationary or slow traffic but when the roofs down forget it at speeds above 40 mph. It's correct i think as Scar says your never going to get an open stag to sound audiophile good. Audible you might manage!

I went for round Pioneer speakers fitted into the Stag speaker inserts for the rear cubbies, and a Retrosound dual cone stereo speaker in the middle of the dash. The dual cone is 7" x 5" whereas the original speaker was 6" x 4". Siome other owners have simply jammed it into the available space, or drilled new holes for the larger speaker. I decided to go for the simpler option of Velcro with an adhesive backing. so fitted that around the existing hole in the dash in the appropriate place for the larger speaker to adhere to. Works absolutely fine. Is it hi-fi quality? Probably not, but good enough for me, and the orchestral sound of the V8 beats it hands down anyway!
